Selena Gomez makes candid career admission as she confesses 'I'm too old'
Emilia Perez star Selena Gomez and Blitz's Saoirse Ronan sat down for Variety's latest Actors on Actors interview and the popstar reflected on her career
Selena Gomez has opened up about her music and acting career, admitting "I might be a little too old."
The singer shared her thoughts in a candid conversation with Saoirse Ronan for Variety's Actors on Actors series. The publication routinely pairs Hollywood heavyweights to interview each other. Nicole Kidman, Zendaya and Kate Winslet are amongst the A-listers set to feature on the programme.
On Wednesday (December 11), Gomez and Ronan stepped into the spotlight and discussed their recent projects, the courage it takes to sing on screen and the wonders of working with Meryl Streep.
Early in the 42-minute conversation, the Disney alum opened up about the challenges of song writing and acting.
The Emilia Perez star asked Ronan about her experience starring in Steve McQueen's new war drama Blitz.
Irish actress Ronan delved into the trials of playing a character that has to sing on-stage and went on to applaud Gomez for her talent.
She said "I just have this newfound respect for musicians like yourself and people who use their voice to tell a story. I think it's just, I don't think people realise how special it is to not be able to like technically sing, but to have that extra 'Je ne sais quoi' that makes you unique and special."
Gomez responded: "Thank you, I appreciate that. I definitely think my strong suit is probably acting but I will say one thing I'm proud of in music is being able to tell a story. My favourite songs are mostly ballads and they're very transparent and honest and I feel comfortable in that zone."
The 32-year-old then confessed: "I think I might be a little too old for the popstar life anymore."
Gomez quickly added: "But I'm genuinely so happy to just be in this new era of my life and so excited to see what's to come because in a lot of ways it's just the beginning for me."
After shooting to fame on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez has successfully flitted between the music and film industries.
She has previously admitted that making music was always a hobby. However, the popstar does not think she will ever sever her connection to the craft.
Elsewhere in the Variety chat, she reflected: "I think my music career is separate [from her acting] however, I don't see that always being a forever thing.
"Professionally, I think I'll always have music in my life because my partner is a musician and I love singing and writing and having moments to just do it for fun. It can be a little vulnerable when you are putting yourself out there versus escaping into a character."
