'The Girlfriend's sex scenes were not the most awkward part - there was one thing far worse'

Prime Video has just dropped the psychological thriller The Girlfriend

The Girlfriend has just landed on Prime Video and the series is adapted from the novel of the same name by Michelle Frances.

This steamy psychological thriller unfolds through two viewpoints - that of successful wife and mother Laura (portrayed by Robin Wright) and her son's new girlfriend, Cherry Laine (Olivia Cooke).

The captivating plot tracks the two women as they vie for Daniel's (Laurie Davidson) affections, with his mum Laura suspecting Cherry is hiding something.

Laura confesses she's an overprotective mum, but her actions hint at something a bit more ominous as she seems to be obsessed with her son.

Daniel's actor Davidson confessed his character shares "awkward" moments with his mum, and the mother-son dynamic is undoubtedly the most cringe-inducing aspect of the series.

In the show's opening scenes, Daniel and Laura are spotted in a sauna together, with the mother getting uncomfortably close to her son.

My first reaction was "this is a bit intimate and creepy, but let's carry on". However, the mother and son relationship only seemed to intensify, with the duo seen embracing in the pool like a couple.

One particular scene, which I won't spoil, involves Laura wrapping her arms around her son at the most awkward of times, which had me choking on my tea.

Actor Davidson elaborated on the more awkward moments between Daniel and Laura: "Those moments are quite awkward!"

"While there are bigger, more obvious interactions that might make the audience squirm, it's often the smaller gestures - like a hand resting on a shoulder - that make you question their relationship.

"Laura sees them as completely normal, but once Cherry points out her discomfort to Daniel, even the simplest touches begin to feel suspect."

The touches, both major and minor, are naturally intentional in an effort to help viewers understand the bond between mother and son.

Daniel hails from a well-to-do family and remains the focal point of his mum's universe, which only heightens the glaring contrasts in Cherry's existence, having emerged from a working-class upbringing with an absent dad.

Whilst one can understand the point being conveyed, there's no escaping that those unsettling scenes will stay lodged in my memory for quite some time.

The Girlfriend airs on Prime Video.
