How to watch Natalie Portman's Lady in the Lake thriller TV series free

Oscar-winner Natalie Portman stars alongside Moses Ingram in the noir thriller based on a New York Times bestseller

TV fans can now dive into a ‘feverish’ new series starring and executive produced by Oscar-winner Natalie Portman. Streaming now, Lady in the Lake is a noir thriller based on the 2019 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Laura Lippman.

The seven-part series revolves around the disappearance of a young girl that grips the US city of Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966 and the lives of two women converging on a fatal collision course. Maddie (Portman) is a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, while Cleo (Moses Ingram) is a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family.

Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger. The series comes from award-winning creator, writer, director and executive producer Alma Har’el, director of Shia LaBeouf’s 2019 drama Honey Boy.

Alongside Portman and Ingram, the limited series stars Y’lan Noel, Byron Bowers, Josiah Cross, Noah Jupe, Dylan Arnold and Mikey Madison. Lady in the Lake marks the first lead role in a TV series for Portman, with the Black Swan star describing the experience as much more ‘taxing’ than a feature film.

Speaking to L’Officiel, she said: “It’s much more of a marathon than a sprint. A film gets a short time period; it’s very intense. A series takes a very, very long time to shoot. It’s extremely demanding and extremely emotional. It’s taxing and you really have to preserve your energy. It’s just really, really consuming. As an actor, you also have a lot more character details because you have so much more time, of course.”

On what persuaded her to make the leap to serial storytelling, she added: “The format of telling a story in a series format allows for such intricacy of character and so much more space to develop a story. It obviously has been so impressive as a medium. Some of the best storytelling of our times has been in the series format.”
