We Were Liars season 2 confirmed as star teases 'big, big plans' for Prime Video sequel

We Were Liars has been renewed for a second season on Prime Video and author E Lockhart has teased what fans can expect from the upcoming episodes.

We Were Liars has been given the go ahead for a second series, three months after the YA drama launched on Prime Video.

Adapted from author E Lockhart's bestselling novel of the same name, We Were Liars centred on American aristocracy, the Sinclair family, renowned for their striking appearance, inherited wealth and tight-knit relationships.

However, a mysteriuos incident turns Cadence Sinclair's (portrayed by Emily Alyn Lind) life upside down as everyone, including her close-knit group, appears to be concealing secrets.

The tale of the Sinclair dynasty isn't finished just yet though with Prime Video commissioning We Were Liars for a second series with Head of US SVoD TV Development and Series describing it as a "must-watch".

The recommissioning hasn't shocked book enthusiasts though who were already aware that Lockhart released her follow-up novel Family of Liars in 2022.

Lockhart has subsequently revealed significant hints about what the second series will explore, revealing to Deadline: "If you watch We Were Liars all the way til the end and you watch the little coda, you can see that that coda tips to the start of Family of Liars.

"We have not forgotten about what's going on with Johnny and Carrie."

Carrie (Mamie Gummer) who has battled with substance abuse throughout her existence, is shown in the finale's closing moments retrieving some tablets from a container.

She turns around to witness what seems to be the apparition of her late son Johnny (Joseph Zada), perched cross-legged on the kitchen counter.

Carrie exclaims: "I thought you left", to which he responds with an eerie: "I don't think I can."

This suggests that Carrie's hallucinations of Johnny might persist into the forthcoming series.

When quizzed about what a second season might entail, co-showrunner Julie Plec hinted it would "theoretically" delve "deeper into the moms' lives as well and add another generation to the story".

This strongly hints that fans are spot-on in their belief that We Were Liars season two will draw from Lockhart's novel Family of Liars.

Lockhart herself further tantalised: "[Carina Adly] MacKenzie and [Julie] Plec have big, big plans for season two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen - and a lot of surprises as well."
