Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes worlds away from Kayce in ‘best film of the year’ out this weekend

One of Luke Grimes’ first roles after achieving worldwide fame on Yellowstone is hitting UK cinemas this week

Yellowstone star Luke Grimes is worlds away from his most well-known character Kayce Dutton in a critically acclaimed new film hitting screens this week.

Already released in the United States last month, Ari Aster’s Eddington is finally coming to the big screen in the UK this Friday, 22nd August.

Set during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic in a small town in New Mexico, the black comedy thriller explores the feud between Sheriff Joe Cross (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) when they go head-to-head in a turbulent mayoral election.

Their political battle ignites unrest in their town, forcing cops such as Grimes’ character Guy Tooley to step in.

While the Yellowstone star has experience playing law enforcement in the Paramount Network’s smash-hit modern Western series, Grimes takes on a much more comedic tone for the latest film by acclaimed Midsommar director Ari Aster.

Esquire described Grimes’ performance as the complete “opposite” of what fans have come to expect from him in their interview with the film and TV star.

“He’s a guy who clearly is just afraid and trying to point the finger anywhere,” the actor said of the character.

“It didn't read that way in the script, originally, but we worked on it, and he became more of a bumbling fool than a hateful person.

“That was our way into it - just a guy trying to figure it all out and failing miserably.”

While the film has received a divisive response so far, many film buffs and critics have called Eddington one of the best films of 2025 and well worth a watch when it finally comes to the UK.

A five-star Google review said: “This movie delivers on its promise to bring you back in time to the pandemic and make you feel those same feelings of isolation, hypocrisy and helplessness.

“This is one of the best of the year thus far and one I will remember fondly. Thank you to the cast, crew, and writers for delivering us with a quality film like this. I hope to see more like it.”

Away from the big screen, Grimes is confirmed to reprise his role as Kayce in the upcoming Yellowstone spin-off, Y: Marshals, set to premiere in late 2025 or early 2026 on CBS.

Teasing the new offshoot, he said: “There are going to be some familiar faces, but we’re not shooting here in Montana.

“Everything else is going to feel like a different world.”
