Yellowstone creator's hit drama starring Demi Moore to return for series two

The first season of Landman, a show by the creator of Yellowstone, premiered in November last year and featured stars Demi Moore, Billy Bob Thornton, and Jon Hamm

A hit show from the creator of Yellowstone will be returning to screens as its creators announce its renewal for a second season.

Landman, co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, is set in the boomtowns of West Texas and is a tale of wealth-seeking in the world of oil rigs. The first series premiered in November on Paramount+ and starred Demi Moore and Billy Bob Thornton.

"Landman was one of the biggest shows of the year because of Taylor Sheridan’s unique ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, harnessing the Neo-Western themes of rugged individualism, ambition and working-class struggles set against contemporary debates around energy, climate change and economic growth," Co-CEO of Paramount Global Chris McCarthy, said.

The show’s other stars include Andy Garcia, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Jon Hamm, and Paulina Chávez. The first episode set new records for Paramount+, pulling in 35 million global streaming viewers and becoming the platform’s first original production, as well as its top engagement driver.

Moore, who most recently won a Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award for her part in The Substance, teased in an interview with This Morning that her role in Landman was "just getting started". She explained that "stepping into the world" completely new for her, as well as for the audience, and said she found working with the cast "fantastic".

The actress, 62, who plays an oil tycoon’s wife in the show, said: “It’s a very interesting world in the boomtown of Fort Worth, Texas. It’s kind of this subculture that we haven’t seen before, which is what I think Taylor does so well.”

She told Deadline at Cannes Film Festival last year that her character gets to wear “lots of nice clothes”, adding: “The substance of it is really exploring the issues around oil, petroleum, on all sides … and then of course there’s – as Taylor does so well – there’s delicious drama within and family dynamics.”

Thornton, 69, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in the series, said that real people working in the sector “love” the show. “The friends that I know, or at least acquaintances that I have who work in or around the oil business have all texted me saying, dude, this is so authentic,” he explained.

Landman is based on the 11-part podcast called Boomtown and is described by Paramount+ as an “upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fuelling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics”.
