Manila North Cemetery Study

This study will be conducted in the Manila North Cemetery, one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Metro Manila, Philippines spanning 54 hectares. More than 10,000 extremely impoverished people, including many street children, reside in the cemetery by inhabiting mausoleums. Researchers chose this location because Manila North Cemetery has become territory for homeless people, particularly street children who earn money carrying coffins and are visible throughout the day wandering both inside and outside the cemetery.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in the Manila North Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries
in Metro Manila, Philippines. The cemetery is owned by the City of Manila, the national
capital, and is one of the largest in the metropolis at 54 hectares. It is located alongside
Andres Bonifacio Avenue. More than 10, 000 people under extreme poverty resided in
this place and made mausoleums their home including a large number of street children.
The researchers selected this place seeing that Manila North Cemetery seemed to be
street peoples territory. It attracts homeless people to inhabit this place particularly street
children. These street children also found a way in here to earn money by carrying coffins
for 50 pesos. They are visible at any time of the day wandering inside and outside the
cemetery.
