"Car Gate Restrictor" A17.1 Sec 2.12.5 2007
Required in code since 1984
Restricts opening of car gate (inner door) and hoistway (outer
doors) when car is out of unlocking zone
Maximum allowed opening is 4 Once outer doors are opened by rescue responders car gate is to be
able to opened without tools
Restrictors can be of electric mechanical design or mechanical only
Restrictor will need to be disarmed to open some gates to rescue

Machine Room Less Elevators "MRL"
Allowed by code since 2004
Allows for hoist machine to be in hoistway
Allows for controller to be in control room in building, could be on
lower floor away from shaft
Some MRL type machines are still installed in conventional
machine room applications
For fire fighting purposes machine in hoistway is somewhat
inaccessible
MRL machines have brake override feature to lower or raise car,
depending on its location in shaft located in control room on
controller
Recommend requesting training from elevator company to operate
emergency brake release
