Semester For FYE Students at Towson University Description of ORIE 305:


ORIE 305 is a one semester, non-credit course required of all first time freshmen entering in the Fall semester at Towson. Each first time freshman is assigned to an academic advisor who is the leader for a section of ORIE 305. This advisor assists the student in his/her transition to Towson and serves as a consultant for educational decision-making and as a resource person during the students first year. The purposes of ORIE 305 are to: a) help each student to increase his/her knowledge of the academic programs, policies, and opportunities at Towson; b) learn and apply skills necessary to make sound decisions about his/her educational program at Towson; and c) identify and use resources at the University that enhance his/her experience.

Philosophy Underlying ORIE 305:

Students who become knowledgeable about the University, who develop a good working relationship with an academic advisor; who develop effective decision-making skills; and who assume responsibility for their own decisions are more likely to become successful members of the University community. ORIE 305 is intended to promote these activities and support students in their development toward being mature learners.

Learning Objectives:

Through ORIE 305, students will: a) gain a better understanding of the purpose, structure, and requirements of the General Education program at TU; b) develop an educational plan for their first year; c) learn how to select, schedule, and register for courses for Spring 2001; d) learn about resources available at the University that address their interests and needs; The basic requirements for each student are

Course Requirements:
to:

a) attend an introductory meeting for the course (usually held at Orientation); b) complete and submit a Student Advisement Survey; c) have and use an email account to facilitate communication between student and advisor; d) consult with his/her advisor prior to making changes in course enrollment; e) meet with the advisor at least twice during the semester with at least one meeting dedicated to Spring 2001 course selection and registration;

f) create and maintain a folder for educational records and planning; and g) attend at least one group meeting during the Fall semester. In addition, I may make additional reasonable requirements of individual students or the advisee group that address the needs and interests of the student(s). These requirements may be in the form of specific events, activities, or assignments that will support meeting the courses learning objectives.
