Basic of Internet:
The Internet is a wold-wide collection of computers. It provides
access to communication services and information resources to of users
around the globe. Internet is also called a the network of networks.
Usage of Internet:
Getting information.
Providing information on the Internet.
Compiling information from the Internet.
Different types of connection:
Dial-up connection.
Direct connection.
Internet Accounts:
SHELL account also called as terminal account.
TCP/IP account.
Internet Addressing:
Internet addressing is a systematic way to identify people,
computers and Internet resources. On the Internet, the term address
refers to many things, from an e-mail address to an URL.
Web Browser:
The World Wide Web browsing means searching for information in
the Internet.A software called the Web browser is used for web browsing
purpose.
Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are the
popular web browsers available in the market. These two browsers have
all the above said capabilities.
Searching the Web:
Two methods are
Using directories
and
Using search engines.
Web Search Engines:
The search Engines collect a database of information about
documents on the web. They allow the user to look for particular words
in the database and it returns links to the documents that contain the
searching terms.
There a dozens of search engines available for searching the web.

Domain Name:
A Domain Name is the identification of computers connected in the
Internet. No two organizations can have the same domain name. A
domain name always contains two or more components separated by
periods.
Some examples of domain names are:
1. Microsoft.com
2. Vsnl.net.in
3. Nasa.gov etc.
Downloading files:
There are millions of files, utilities and applications across the
internet that you can try out free of charge. We can download those files
or transfer them to your PC using computer protocol called File Transfer
Protocol (FTP).
Publishing the Web:
After the web pages are tested, it is the time to publish it. That is,
place the web pages on the server and make them other to use it with
security. The security should be both on the server side and on their
viewer side.
E-mail:
Electronic Mail is an electronic message sent from one computer
to another computer via communication links. The messages sent may
be personal or business-related with attachments like pictures or other
documents.
Components of an e-mail:
Three main parts
Headers.
Message Body.
Signature.
Composing , Sending and Forwarding e-mail:
Composing e-mail means preparing e-mail. This is done by
following the steps given below.

Open the compose mail window by pressing Ctrl+N
Fill in the header which contains the recipients address.
Compose/type the message body.
Send it by clicking on the icon labelled send.
Sending E-Mail and Attachments:
Type the Email address of the person you are sending the
message to in the To: Box
(jkirst@bakersfieldcollege.edu). Press tab.
In the Subject Box type a topic. (e.g., Research Project)
To attach a File with your E-mail, click on the Attach Files
button.
Click on Browse Box. Click the down arrow next to Look In,
and find the disk or folder for your document (A:)
Select your document in the list, and click Open button.
Click the Attach button.
Click the Compose button to return to the message box.
Click in the Message Box area and type your message.
Remember to sign your name.
Click the Check Spelling button.
Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the Send button.
The screen will read Your message has been sent send.
Click the Continue button. Close the Internet window.
Close all windows and log off computer.
