The future is bright
With a target output of 20 gigawatts by 2022, India is embarking on an ambitious plan to tap
the sun to power 1/8th of its energy needs. Powered by lower global costs of photovoltaics
and focused policy initiatives, solar energy is now not only practical but also economically
feasible. With over 300 days of sunlight and a high population density, Indias geography
is ideally suited for solar power. Improved efficiencies in photovoltaic systems and local
manufacturing capabilities too are fuelling access to cheaper solar energy.
Tapping the solar potential
Concerns over climate change and energy security in recent years have helped rekindle an
interest in clean and renewable sources of energy. Improvements in technology and policy
driven financial incentives have helped reduce the capital cost of solar power projects, one of
the main impediments in the past.
Over 2,00,000 jobs have already been created in the sector, with a growth rate of over 30%.
To excel as a professional in this specialized field, you are expected to have an understanding
of various engineering disciplines: you will be involved in activities ranging from site
assessment to fabrication of photovoltaic panels and implementation of storage technology.
You will work in solar parks to bring together various technologies to help generate clean,
perpetual power. In this unique course, you will acquire an understanding of engineering
constructs combined with real-world examples and problem solving exercises.

THE INDUSTRY TRENDS
LARGE, GRID CONNECTED PROJECTS
With improvements in grid connectivity and lower cost of solar films, solar energy has
moved beyond powering individual homes and is now increasingly being used to power
communities and cities through rooftop solar projects and cities through large, multi-hectare
solar farms.
BUILDUP OF MANUFACTURING CAPACITY
Multinationals such as Tata BP, Moser Baer and Siginet have set up plants for PV
manufacturing, so have the leaders in solar thermal power generation. Capacity building in
Indian and other Asian markets have made solar energy, particularly photovoltaics, far more
cost effective today than in the past.
SOFTWARE FOR PROJECT PLANNING
Advanced software for site assessment allows accurate planning of solar park sites, and
allows investors to effectively manage the costs of solar plants.
Our Approach
Curriculum per se industry needs
This course has inputs from both photovoltiac and solar thermal industries, and is uniquely
suited to develop professionals across multiple technologies.
Focus on learning by doing
Interactive visits to solar farms help you understand the practical aspects involved in largescale generation of solar power, and also connect with experts in the field.
Close industry connect
You will have close connect with industry leaders to keep abreast of developments: a healthy
mix of core academics and industry insight by visiting faculty from the industry.

OUR OFFERING: ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN
SOLAR ENERGY ENGINEERING
The Advanced Certificate in Solar Engineering programme will provide you exposure across
the solar power generation lifecycle, along with intensive sessions on both photovoltaic and
solar thermal technologies. Classroom sessions will be supplemented by interactive visits to
industry facilities such as solar farms and testing labs.
intensive sessions on
both photovoltaic
and solar thermal
technologies
Solar Farm Visit
An interactive visit to a solar power farm is scheduled
to understand how large scale solar power is
generated, and also learn first hand from experts the
challenges involved in project planning, setup and
technical execution.
Proposed Curriculum
Spread across 12 months, the curriculum is devised to provide you theoretical, hands-on and
industry exposure to the fundamentals of renewable energy, its technical and management
aspects, and then give you specific knowledge of solar thermal and photovoltaic technology.

About IERA
The Institute for Engineering Research & Analysis (IERA), a specialized training division
of PM DIMENSIONS established at Gandhinagar, offers advanced certification programmes
of 9-12 months duration in specialized areas of engineering such as Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD), Software Product Engineering, Solar Engineering; and intends rolling out
several such programmes, in the near future, based on industry needs today.
By offering quality programmes in niche areas of engineering, we are striving to improve
the quality of the pool of engineers, and match industry expectations for key skilled
professionals. Focused on creating practicing engineers, our programmes combine intensive
theory sessions with industry-oriented labs and internships.
A Career in Engineering Services
Engineering services cover a wide range of activities supporting the engineering project
lifecycle, from design to project management to operations and maintenance. Some illustrative
work we do is in the area of
Computational Fluid Dynamics
Health, Safety, Environment Audits
Finite Element Analysis
Compliance Management &
Documentation Services
Thermal Hydraulics Analysis
Risk & Reliability Engineering Services
As engineering services are project and client-driven, it is difficult to predict project-specific
job roles. However, candidates after completion of training can expect to be engaged in one
of the following roles depending on their electives and area of interest:
