IHIMU CRP SYSTEM WITH
WRTSIL PROPULSION PACKAGE
The many major benefits from installing Contra
Rotating Propellers (CRP) on diesel-electric driven
vessels all add up to significantly reduced fuel
consumption and lower vibration levels onboard.
Reduction in propulsion power by up to 10%
or 10% smaller propeller diameter
Higher efficiency at part load condition
Redundant propeller
Higher redundancy in the propulsion system
Greater cargo volume

Proven design concept
Cleaner exhaust gas emission
CO2 and SOX reduction 10%
NOX reduction 2040%
Higher emission reduction which can be
effectively combined with gas engines
Excellent course-keeping and superior
manoeuvring
Greater comfort in living quarters
Less force exiting from engine
CONVENTIONAL PROPULSION
Contra Rotating Propellers are the best known
hydrodynamic principle to reduce power and fuel
consumption for any ship type. The key objective is
to reduce the vessels fuel consumption by better
propulsive efficiency.
The working principle is simple and effective: the
power is split in a forward and aft propeller which
through the different direction of rotation cancel out
the rotational energy losses behind the propeller.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS FOR
CONTRA ROTATING PROPELLERS
The greatest benefit from the contra rotating
solution is in effectively reducing the operational
costs for any vessel.
Each contra rotating solutions is designed
to fit the vessel and to meet the specific
requirements; this means that our solutions
are optimised for energy efficiency, without
compromising on either manoeuvrability or
comfort levels.
CRP SYSTEM
A contra rotating propulsion system consists of two
concentric shafts.
The concept was developed in 1988 and has
been installed on several references since then. The
maximum power applied today is 27,160 kW.
The energy efficiency of a vessel is the result of the
interaction between its main components. This starts
with the best propeller with the least energy losses.
WRTSIL DIESEL-ELECTRIC PROPULSION PACKAGE
Wrtsil offers a wide range of generating sets
for service power generation and diesel-electric
propulsion, in which Wrtsil is a world leader.
The 4 stroke diesel generators have a range
from 600 to 20,000 kW.
Wrtsil has been chosen to provide
diesel-electric propulsion for coastal vessels,
special vessels, cruise vessels, ferries, naval
applications and the recent LNG carriers with
Wrtsil 50DF diesel-electric installations.
This is due to the high quality and load step
acceptance of Wrtsil diesel generating sets
and smokeless common-rail capacity associated
with a redundant, flexible and clean dieselelectric propulsion.
The association with CRP systems from
IHIMU allows Wrtsil to offer demanding
customers even more fuel efficient and
IMPACT FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
environment friendly solutions, with short
payback times on their investment and
complying with IMO regulations even in the ECA
zones.

With experience of installing the system on VLCCs and a
large bulk carrier, the contra-rotating propeller (CRP) is an
established unique technology of IHI Marine United Inc (IHIMU),
that can bring large gains to a ships propulsion efficiency.
IHIMU has recently developed an application for the propulsion
system with this contra-rotating configuration for diesel electric
propulsion vessel, coupling this further enhancement with the
improvement of the hull form, resulting in the resistance of a
small ship but with a large cargo carrying capacity.
