Observation Report on Parenting Behavior/Style
I. Statement of Purpose
Parents greatly affect their childrens behavior. Why do parents behave the way
they do when raising children? One answer is that they are modeling the behavior of
their own parents, having learned how to parent in the course of being parented.
Another is that they are behaving in accord with information about appropriate
parenting acquired through books, Web sites, or informal and formal advice.
After studying the different parenting behavior/styles ( authoritative, neglectful,
permissive, and authoritarian) in our graduate study class, I need to gain some practical
experience for me to have a full understanding of the theories discussed. Through
exploration and observation on how the parents discipline their children in a fast food
restaurant, I can conclude about the parents exercise of control and what will be the
outcomes on childs behavior. The objective of this study was to determine whether
parenting behavior/styles and practices are associated with child's behavior.
II. Description of Participants
Participant #1:Mother, daughter and yaya
A wealthy family. The mother looks 30s with her young face. She
was wearing an expensive dress and accessories. Her daughter is
around seven years old. She is very naughty and likes to play
everywhere she wanted. The Yaya is a teenager girl. Shes passive
and only follows the command of her amo.
Participant #2: Father and a daughter
An old looking business man with her 10-year old daughter.
The Father acts professionally and his daughter behave accordingly
with finesse. His daughter is a pupil in SPED grade 4.
Participant #3: Mother and two son
Miss Martialyn is a young mother with 2 son named Kieko and
Keno. Kieko is 9 years old and Keno is 7 years old. Her children
were so energetic and playful.
III. Description of the Setting
It is near lunch on Monday , August 1, 2016, in the fast food
restaurant Jollybee Calbayog ground floor. It was crowded with
customers. I stayed near the counter for a clear and intimate observation.
Participant #1 stayed in front my table. The mother facing me while her
daughter and yaya facing hers. Participant #2 stayed on the right side of
the main door. Participant #3 were with me in my table.
IV. Summary of Findings/ Observation and Conclusion
Observations
Participant #1
On the disciplinary strategies of the parents, the parent neglects
the behavior of the child. She let her child do what her child wanted
to do. She let her yaya lookout for her child. When it comes to
choosing what they will eat, The parent is the one who decides of
what food to be ordered. Her child and the yaya go directly to their
table and wait for her mother. The parent already knows what food to
be ordered for her child. As I observe on the childs behavior, the
child was so spoiled. She act bossy and demand more. She so rude
to her yaya and her mother. The parent has low sensitivity because
she neglects the behavior of her child and low expectation for self
control because she let the yaya to discipline her child , therefore the
parent is Neglectful.
Participant #2
The parent doesnt have any problem with his daughter because
of the maturity of the child. There was a good communication
between them. The child acts accordingly. The parent let his child
chose what she wanted to eat. The parent can afford anything she
wanted. No limitations and feel free to order. The child behave well.
No worries to the parents because she looks independent and
matured. She loves to talk to her father as well as to others. The
parent has low expectation for self control but high sensitive, therefor
the parent is Permissive.
Participant #3
The parent has a command that the children always follow.
Though children were very naughty and playful, she can control the
behavior of her children by just reprimanding. When it comes to
choosing what they will eat, the parent asks her children of what they
wanted to eat. She gives options of menu and explains of what is the
best for them. After they chose what they want, the mother orders
and the children stayed on their table. The children in participant #3
are naughty but can be controlled by their mother. The parent has
high sensitive and high expectation of self-control, therefor the parent
is Authoritative.
Conclusion
Information and education on optimal parenting styles and early
establishment of effective practices are both important to a childs social
adjustment and success. In many situations, adoption of a flexible and
warm authoritative parenting style is most beneficial for a childs social,
intellectual, moral and emotional growth. However, research in the area
of parent-child interaction must continue to expand to evaluate not only
outcomes in a broader variety of ethnic/racial/cultural and socioeconomic
groups, but also outcomes in children of different ages so that families in
all types of situations can reap the full benefits of research.
