Mid Unit Practice Test and Objectives

The document provides objectives and practice questions for a mid-unit test on exponential growth and decay. It lists 4 topics covered on the test, each worth 10 points, including: 1) solving word problems involving compound interest and depreciation, 2) graphing exponential functions, 3) determining the type of exponential function from its equation, and 4) writing equations of graphs given parent and transformed functions. It then provides 4 word problems to solve involving compound interest, 4 equations to classify as exponential growth, decay, or neither, and an exponential function to graph, finding integer and rational coordinate pairs.

Objectives for Exponential Growth and Decay Mid Unit Test

Write the objective number next to the corresponding question on the practice test. Then rate your
level understanding of the each objective. Write your rating of your understanding next to the
objective on this sheet.
1=I really dont understand how to do this at all even when a knowledgeable person is trying to help me.
2=I can understand follow along when a knowledgeable person is explaining the concept to me.
3=I can do much of this by myself, but I get stuck sometimes and need help. (Under comments identify where
you need help.)
4=I can do this independently and check my answer.
5=I can do this independently and check my answer. I can also choose an efficient method if there are several
ways to approach this problem.
There are 4 topics covered on the mid unit test. Each topic is worth 10 points.
1. Solve word problems involving compound interest and depreciation. (You may use a calculator
on this section only.)
A. Find the value of an investment or a debt compound n times per year
B. Calculate annual depreciation
C. Calculate continuously compounded interest
D. Solve for the initial investment amount given, the value of an investment
2. Graphing exponential functions
A. Given an equation, graph all visible integer points and two additional rational points
B. Identify domain, range and asymptote of an exponential function
3. Determine from the equation they type of function
A. Exponential growth
B. Exponential decay
C. Exponential but neither growth nor decay
D. Not an exponential function at all
4. Given graphs of parent functions and transformed functions, write the equation of the graph.
A. All parent functions will be given. You will just need to match them to a numbered
graphs.
B. Most transformed functions will have only one transformation (h or k). Two functions will
have either a horizontal or vertical flip (reflection) and on additional transformation of (h
or k)
