Work Under Contract
The Key Debates of Medieval Philosophy (under
contract with Routledge). This volume will be part of a
new Routledge series devoted to articles in the history
of philosophy. This volume will pair an already
published article on an often-taught topic with a newly
commissioned one that builds on it, takes issue with it,

or details the way medieval philosophers themselves

debated with each other over key issues. The
volumes goal is to allow scholars to see a medieval
philosophers work from different perspectives, to foster
debate, and to model critical analysis for graduate
students and advanced undergraduates. I will write the
introduction to the volume and introductions to each of
the subsequent 13 chapters.
The Psychology of Evil: Scriptural Traditions and Their
Reception,to appear in The Handbook of Moral
Psychology in History, edited by Taneli Kukkonen

Work in Progress
A Thomas Aquinas Reader. This work, to be edited by
Robert Pasnau and myself, will contain long selections
on Aquinass metaphysics, natural philosophy,
philosophy of religion, action theory and ethics, as well
as shorter selections on other topics of importance. We
will publish the work with Hackett. We expect that it
will become the definitive Aquinas anthology.
Journal article on conscience in Shusaku Endos novel
The Sea and Poison. The article articulates the theory
of conscience and its development presented by the
novel and offers some reflections on the value of
literature for the formation of conscience.
Journal article on the vocation of the university. This
piece offers an account of vocation, argues that a
university (like many complex corporate entities) is a
moral person, and finds that a university is therefore a
proper candidate for having a vocation. The article
continues by exploring the early history of universities,
arguing that it was in the 13th and 14th centuries that
universities discerned their vocation. Finally, the essay
explains the relevance of a universitys vocation for
addressing such controversial issues as the way
university education is marketed, curricular offerings,
assessment of courses and programs, and values or
virtues education.
Monograph on Aquinass Ethics and Action Theory (my
major research project during my Fulbright tenure in
2010). This book will begin with an investigation of
Aquinass moral psychology (in particular, his action
theory and account of moral responsibility). It will

continue with a discussion of Aquinass virtue ethics,

including chapters on charity and the gifts of the Holy
Spirit, topics that are often neglected by philosophers.
It will conclude with a discussion of the ways in which
Aquinas applies his theoretical views to practical issues.
Dr. Hilary Gaskin, philosophy editor at Cambridge
University Press, has invited me to submit the
manuscript when it is completed.
