Course Description - Sp 2113 Public Speaking
Prepares student for the demands of various speaking situations. Practice exercises in preparation and
practical application of messages for public communication. Addresses personal and professional speaking,
small group communication, listening skills, and message organization and adaptation. Teaches basics of
vocal ease and speaking mechanics and improvement.
Importance in the Mission of the University-
We spend a great deal of our lives presenting ourselves, our knowledge and our professions through the way we
speak. While it is important to write well, it is equally important to be able to deliver information in a persuasive,
clear, articulate and yes, even entertaining way. Every year attention spans seem to grow shorter. The spoken word
must be more commanding to reach its audience. You may not have learned any exercises that gave you the resources
to succeed in this area. We want you to succeed. It is part of the mission of this University that you speak well are
able to communicate your thoughts clearly to others to listen and respond in the moment as well as to create and
deliver prepared speech. This course aims to begin that preparation this is a lifelong art.
Goals to improve practical oral communication skills through:
Improving vocal understanding and preparation for performance to learn enough about the voice,
breath support, speaking and relaxation and gesturing and to improve delivery and build
confidence.
Developing active listening skills - Learning skills in audience assessment and inclusion.
Clarifying speech goals, improving organization of speeches and effectiveness in delivery through
techniques in oral presentation.
Working with different kinds of speaking situations.
Utilizing technology and integrating speech with effective visual and oral material.
Improving speech delivery and impact.

You will be videotaped during the course in order to give you a chance to see and hear yourself. You are expected to utilize the
videotape, along with the feedback and self-evaluation to work on building the speech and improving it to the next level. You will
receive feedback from the instructor and your fellow students. This is an important part of the process. And part of your grade.
You may be required to create video presentations for your future jobs, you need to become comfortable with your own voice and to
begin to know how to utilize video as an effective rehearsal tool in order to change those things you dont think of as representing
the BEST you. You will have the opportunity to use video rehearsal for extra credit.
I encourage you now and in future to recognize and find opportunities to be a presenter, in future you might consider opportunities
in your favorite organizations and or social clubs for public speaking. Or even join the Toast Masters Club dedicated to mastering
public speaking. Currently find the short moments in classes when you can present, speak up and utilize your skills in speaking. Are
you swaying, informing, calling to action?
Most professional speakers have used qualified private vocal coaches, and in future when you have an important presentation or
feel that you need further work on a particular area you may want to remember that. All the real politicians and public speakers
do it why not you? In any case, keep your books, they represent the basics. How the voice works, why it doesnt, ways to adjust
and practice, the basics of speeches and lots of examples.

Most of the exercises in relaxation, breath support, tonal placement, releasing the voice from the body, improving the speech,
the range etc. are on the cd/available for practice in the Voice Book. Once we learn them, you are expected to practice them on
your own, in order to maximize your improvement. The warm ups we do are part of making a better voice and delivering a
better speech. You will find the basic information on the speeches in the Carnegie Book. The mastery of the exercises comes
through repetition and careful observation. This is a lifetime process. If you have questions, please ask. I am happy to go over
any questions you may have.
