Poetry Out Loud: Explication Project
For this assignment, you will explicate a poem. To explicate basically means to unfold it
to reveal whats inside. You will go through the four steps that we have been practicing and present
your poem to the class.
Part 1: You will choose a poem that you find interesting. You need to make sure it is from a notable
author; it needs to be approved by me.
Part 2: Read your poem and try to make sense of it....don't worry, you have plenty of time to go back
over it as much as you want.
Part 3: You will need to research your poet. Finding background information about your poet may
reveal why they wrote the poem in the first place. (Save your sources as you will turn in a works cited
page.)
Part 4: Rewrite the poem, paraphrasing it in your own words. This needs to be presented in a side by
side comparison. Make sure you use your own words! Do not copy!
Part 5: Next, create a Keynote (open to partners), iMovie (open to partners), or a poster (only one
person). You will need to display something for each of the following:
1. Introduction: Do not just say, "I had 'Sonnet 18.'"- Attention getter/hook
2. Author: Give background information about the poem, including the author and the
general year it was written, the title, and the main theme of the poem.
3. Speaker: Give a brief reason why you think the speaker is who you say it is. This may be
based on what you know about the author, but this is not always the truth. BE CAREFUL
HERE.
4. Paraphrase/ Summarize: What could the poem possibly mean? (When in doubt, guess.
Remember that literary interpretation is subjective.) Paraphrase every line to clarify
meaning. Put the poem and your paraphrase on this slide. This slide might need to be split
into a couple slides.
5. Explanation: Identify what is happening in the poem. Without saying-Who? What?
Where? When? Why?-explain those things.
6. Words: Is there anything significant about the placement of words?
1. What sort of meter or flow does this poem have?
2. What about the word choice? Why did the author choose this word in particular?
What is the significance? What is the mood that the author is trying to create?
7. Figures of Speech: Does this poem use any figures of speech?
1. Where are they?
2. How do they contribute to the meaning?
8. Connection: Connect your paper to the rest of the world, explaining why others might
enjoy this poem as well and how we could apply it to our own lives.
You will present your poem to the class. Before you present, you will hand in your paraphrased poem
that you wrote as well as a typed works cited page in MLA format. Each person must speak for about
equal time.
