Software Integration Project 1

Students will create a PowerPoint presentation explaining a key topic from the Civil War era that had a major impact on society. Working in pairs, students will select a topic from provided videos, generate bullet points on key words and concepts, and include images, a short video clip, and citations. The teacher will assess students' mastery using a rubric to score their presentation for meeting requirements like number of slides, use of sources, and explanation of their chosen topic. This project supports technology standards by promoting creative thinking, student-led learning, and safe use of digital tools to construct knowledge and collaborate globally.

Software Integration Planning Sheet

By integrating Educational Software into the curriculum, we take one step closer to
meeting the needs of ALL of our digital students. By giving them the opportunity to
learn and explore using multimedia software they become more focused, engaged
and motivated. In this project, you will select a grade level, subject area and
Common Core Standard to begin the process of using the software in order to more
effectively help ALL of your students create an academic product showcasing their
understanding of the concept you are teaching.

1) Begin planning

Grade level: 10th or 11th

Topic/Subject Area: Social Studies: American History: Civil War Cause

and Effect

Common Core Standard(http://www.cpalms.org):

SS.912.A.2.1: Understand the causes, course, and consequences of the

Civil War and Reconstruction and its effect on the American people.

2) Select your Software

Browse the internet for software that supports the Common Core
Standard you selected for the general population of your students.

Software/APP/Website Game

Video for introduction to assignment:

Assignment videos for Students to choose a topic for their

presentation: http://www.civilwar.org/education/in4/

How does this software support the Common Core Standard

you selected?

The introductory video gives a fast-paced overview of the Civil War,

important names of key people, cause and effect on American society,
multiple key words, and the aftermath of warfare in a 1 minute time
frame. The website for multiple videos allows the students to
collaborate with one another and choose a topic that intrigues them.
The videos are categorized by various subcategories, allowing the
students to dig deeper into their research using higher order thinking
skills and applying these ideas of cause and effect to their
assignment.

3) Now make them apply what they have learned:

Think about the experience your students will have with the software
you selected. After the students interact with the software you
selected, come up with an activity using one of the Microsoft Office
Suite programs that forces your students to apply what they have
learned using the software you selected. Try to force them to create
something that utilizes critical thinking skills.

What Office program will your students use? PowerPoint

Presentation Software

What will your students create or do with that program?

Students will collaborate with a partner to create an original

visual presentation explaining a key topic, of their choice from the
website listed above, that had a major impact on society during or
after the Civil War. Using this presentation software, students will
generate bullet points for various key words used in the chosen topic
video. For example: Your topic could be Reconstruction and your key
words could include Union states and Southern states, 13th
amendment, 14th amendment and 15th amendment; broken down into
categories, each key word could use one slide for explanation and/or
definitions (EXTRA POINTS for being able to COMPARE and CONTRAST
key words to identify and explain their differences!!!!!). Students MUST
choose only one video from the website provided. The video must then
be listed under either the Works Cited slide as a reference, or be
presented in the presentation itself as a live html link. Students will
need to be able to use general search engines on the Internet, such as
Google or Bing, to find images and facts, as well as evidence to
support those facts that are found in chosen topic video. Each
presentation will need to include:
At least 10 slides (minimum; 15 maximum)
At least 2 images
One short video clip supporting the chosen topic area (can
be the chosen topic video, if not please choose a
supportive video of your topic that is less than 3 minutes in
length)
3-5 key words that help explain your chosen Civil War topic
in full detail that are mentioned in chosen video
One slide mentioning all links and sources (also known as a
Works Cited page) at the end of the presentation
showing where you retrieved your information used in
presentation, 2 source minimum

4) How will you measure their mastery of the skill you had in
mind?
Visit Rubistar.com to create a rubric that you will use to score the
project/activity/assignment that your students will create. Attach that
rubric to this sheet.

5) Show me an example
Create an example of what you want your students to create. Attach it
to this page along with your rubric.

6) Decide which tech standards you met as a teacher and your

students met as digital learners:
NETS-T Standard (http://www.iste.org/STANDARDS )
1c.: Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and
clarify students conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and
creative processes
1a.: Promote, support and model creative and innovative thinking and
innovativeness
2b.: Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable
all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active
participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own
learning, and assessing their own progress
4a.: advocate, model and teach safe, legal and ethical use of digital
information and technology

NETS-S Standard (http://www.iste.org/STANDARDS )

2. Digital Citizen: Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and
opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected
digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and
ethical.
3. Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of
resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves
and others.
4. Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to
identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative
solutions.
7. Global Collaborator: Students use digital tools to broaden their
perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and
working effectively in teams locally and globally.

7) Turn in this planning sheet along with one copy of your

handout to me for grading!
