PATS (Ford Securi-lock) Passive Anti-theft System
1996 and later
Interrupts fuel delivery and injector drive on all, also starter interrupt on some.
There are 5 different pats types (A,B,C,D,E)
Maximum number of keys 8 -16 (unlimited on some applications)
Components:
Pats module (stand alone or included with PCM, instrument cluster (HEC, ICM, VIC), or
SCIL
Ignition key (transponder), lock cylinder (transceiver) (reader/exciter)
Communication network (J1850, ISO or CAN)
Theft lamp (led or theft)
PCM
Starter relay
Note: scan tool may not have a PATS module to select, since the pats function is included in
many other modules.
Operation:
Basic transponder function
PATS module energizes the transponder key through the transceiver halo. (run or start
position)
Transponder key broadcasts its key code to the PATs module transceiver.
Transceiver sends a coded message to the PATS module
Pats module transmits a signal to the PCM to enable or disable start (fuel pump, starter, etc)
Theft Lamp operation:
1. Key out, lamp flashes once every 2 seconds (standby)
2. Key on, two to three second prove out
3. Key accepted, lamp out
4. Key rejected, lamp flashes 16 Hz
Servicing a PATS system
How to verify a PATS related issue
Lamp flashing and no-start symptom
DTC P1260 present in PCM
(You must know where the PATs system is located for scan tool tests)
Anti-scan feature (type B,C, & E only)
If an un-programmed key is used, the theft lamp will flash rapidly. At this time, even the
programmed keys will not work. The un-programmed key must be left in, with the ignition on for
30 seconds (time out)
Do not let battery die during PATS programming or servicing
Spare keys (all systems)
Need 1 programmed key (type A & D) or 2 programmed keys (type B,C, & E)
Put key in/on for 10 seconds, within 5 seconds put in blank key
Component replacement
PATS module
Type A & D
No procedure, just install, cycle key on, automatically programs
Type B,C, & E
Requires NGS, and special procedure, 2 programmed keys, etc
PCM
(type A & D)
No procedure, just install, cycle key on, automatically programs
Type B,C, & E
Requires NGS
