Friction+Problem+Set

This document discusses three friction problems: 1) Determining the force P required to start a wedge with a 15 degree friction angle. 2) Finding the minimum force P to prevent block B from slipping left when a 100N force F acts on block A and coefficients of friction are 0.2 and 0.3. 3) Computing the horizontal force P needed to start or prevent a 500lb block on a 45 degree incline with 0.25 coefficient of friction from moving up or down, and determining the friction force when P=400lb.

Friction Problems

1.Determine the force P required

to start the wedge shown below if
the angle of friction for all
surfaces in contact is 15.

2. The block A is acted upon by a force

F of 100N. Assume that the
coefficient of friction to be 0.2
between blocks A and B, and 0.3
between the other contacting
surfaces. Deterine the minimum
horizontal force P required to prevent
block B from slipping to the left.
Disregard the weights of blocks.

3. The 500-lb block is in contact with

45 incline. The coefficient of
friction is 0.25. Compute the value
of the horizontal force P necessary
to:

a. just start the block up the incline

b. just prevent motion down the

incline

c. If P=400 lb, what is the amount and

direction of the friction force?
