Math Problem Solving Strategies

The document shows different strategies for solving math word problems, including making a table or list, drawing a diagram, using guess and check, and using logical reasoning. Specifically, it provides examples of using a table to solve a problem about weekly jogging times over 6 weeks, using a diagram to solve a problem about cutting a ribbon into equal pieces, using guess and check to solve a problem about counting heads and legs of chickens and cows, and using logical reasoning to solve a problem about identifying missing letters in a pattern series.

STRATEGY 1 MAKES A TABLE OR AN ORGANIZED LIST

Marcel takes up jogging 10 minutes per day on the first week. On the second week he
jogs for 12 minutes per day. If he jogs 7 days each week, what will be his total jogging
time on the sixth week.

In this strategy we use a table to determine the total time on the sixth week.

WEEK MINUTES PER DAY MINUTES PER WEEK

1 10 70
2 12 84
3 14 98
4 16 112
5 18 126
6 20 140

SOLUTION:

Week = 7days

In Week 1 = 7 days (10 minutes per day)

= 70 minutes per week

In week 2 = 7 days (12 minutes per day)

= 84 minutes per week

In week 3 = 7 days (14 minutes per day)

= 98 minutes per week

In week 4 = 7 days (16 minutes per day)

= 112 minutes per week

In week 5 = 7 days (18 minutes per day)

=126 minutes per week

In week 6 = 7 days (20 minutes per day)

= 140 minutes per week

On the sixth week the total jogging of Marcel is 140 minutes.

STRATEGY 2 DRAWS A DIAGRAM, PICTURE OR MODEL

Janna found a piece of 9 inches red ribbon. She cut into equal length. She made 3 cuts.
How long is each piece of the red ribbon long?

---------------------------------/---------------------------------------/------------------------------------
9 inches red ribbon

SOLUTION:

9 inches red ribbon

___________________ = 3 inches per piece
cut into 3

STRATEGY 3 GUESS AND CHECK

Lola Timotea owns a hacienda in Puro Milagros, Masbate City. She owns a chicken and
a cow. In counting heads there are 51, counting legs there are 140. How many chicken
and cow has Lola Timotea?

Solution No 1: Solution No. 2:

Chicken has 2 legs Chicken has 2 legs
Cow has 4 legs Cow has 4 legs
Chicken = 2 legs (39 pieces) Chicken = 2(32)
= 78 = 64
Cow = 4 legs (32 pieces) Cow =4(19)
= 128 = 76
Chicken and cow Chicken and cow
= 78 + 128 64 + 76
= 206 =140

So that, Lola Timotea has 32 chicken and 19 cow

STRATEGY 4 LOGICAL REASONING

In these series, you will be looking at both the letter pattern and the number pattern. Fill
the blank in the middle of the series or end of the series.
1. SCD, TEF, UGH, ____, WKL
A. CMN
B. UJI
C. VIJ
D. IJT
Answer: Option C

ALPHABET SERIES

STUVW

CDEFGHIJKL

PATTERN LETTER

S C D SCD
T E F TEF
U G H UGH
V I J VIJ
W K L WKL

There are two alphabetical series here. The first series is with the first letters only:
STUVW. The second series involves the remaining letters: CD, EF, GH, IJ, KL.
