EDCI 718: Learning Technologies Course Overview
EDCI 718 Learning Technologies is a course designed to expose educators to new
technology tools that can be used in the classroom to engage students and enhance student
learning. This course also familiarizes educators with the International Society for Technology in
Education (ISTE)s National Educational Technology Standards. These standards, which were
recently updated, include technology standards for both teachers and for students. Finally, this
course introduces the Understanding by Design or Backwards Design lesson planning
template as an alternative lesson plan template and as a standards-based template for
educators to use versus the traditional lesson plan templates.
This course started as a refresher course for me because I completed a similar course
during my undergraduate program and because I consider myself to be a very technologically
literate educator. However, this course did inspire me to share my technology in education
knowledge with other educators outside of this course. After completing this course, I
registered as a presenter at the 2017 Mid-America Association for Computers in Education
(MACE) Conference in Manhattan, Kansas. For my presentation, I focused on the use of the
Google Apps for Education in the classroom, and part of my presentation was based on the
discussion I had about Google Classroom with a fellow educator in EDCI 718. The
presentation was structured for educators who had little to no experience in using the Google
Apps in the classroom, and it led to follow up discussions with the educators who participated
in the presentation outside of the conference. Since this conference, I have participated in
smaller district technology inservices and I plan on adapting this presentation for more
conferences in the future. Technology is a major aspect in my instructional strategies, and this
course solidified my use of technology in the classroom.
