Student Work #1:

The student above clearly understands the significance of having a voice, as she states, “It is
important to have a voice so you are not excluded from decisions that would inevitably affect
you.” Additionally, the student makes a comment on the effect of having a voice: “They [a
person] are empowered by their words and actions.” This student understands that having a
voice is essential to weighing in on social issues and empowering oneself through words and
actions.
Student Work #2:
This student’s scope of understanding on the significance of voice is reflected in the first
sentence: “To have a voice is the ability to engage in meaningful conversations and having to
make a difference through what a person says.” The concludes in saying, “Voice is a source of
empowerment and I believe that is the benefit for having a voice. Having a voice leads to self-
determination, autonomy, and the ability to have a say in decisions.”

This student recognizes that having a voice allows for one to advocate for and make change. She
states, “Having a voice in society is important because it leads to the empowerment of certain
groups and allows one to serve as a representative in certain discussions to help contribute to a
change in society.” Here, this students is acknowledging of the power of voice is an tool for
advocacy to promote change for their community or cause.
