FLUID MECHANICS TUTORIAL QUESTIONS
1- The density of an oil is 850 kg/m3. Find its relative density and Kinematic viscosity if
the dynamic viscosity is 5 x 10-3 kg/ms.
𝜌𝑜𝑖𝑙 = = 850 kg/m3 , 𝜌𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1000 kg/m3
soil (relative density of oil)= 850 / 1000 = 0.85
Dynamic viscosity =μ= 5 x 10-3 kg/ms
Kinematic viscosity = ν= μ / 𝜌 = 5 x 10-3/850= 5.88 x 10-6 m2s-1
2- The volume of 40 g of substance is 10 cm3. If the density of water is 1 g cm-3 , will the
substance float or sink?
𝑚 40
𝜌= = 10 = 4 g /cm 3 substance density= 4 g cm-3 > water density= 1 g cm-3,
𝑉
therefore, substance will sink.
3- A small reservoir with a volume of 25 m3 is filled by water. Considering density of
water as 1000 kg/m3, calculate (a) the mass, and (b) the specific weight of the water.
𝑚 𝑚
𝑎) 𝜌𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1000 = 𝑚 = 25 000 𝑘𝑔
𝑉 25
𝑏) 𝑊 = 𝑚 × 𝑔 = 25 000 × 9.81 = 245 250 𝑁
𝑊 245250
𝛾= = = 9810 𝑁/𝑚3
𝑉 25
4- Calculate the friction head loss in a pipe with a diameter of 1 m, and length of 30 m.
Friction factor (λ) of the pipe is 0.03. Mean flow velocity in the pipe is 1.2 m/s
𝜆 𝐿 𝑉2 0.03 × 30 × 1.22
ℎ𝑓 = = = 0.066 𝑚
2𝑔𝐷 2 × 9.81 × 1
