IP Address Classes

IP addresses are divided into five classes - A, B, C, D and E - based on the high-order bits of the first octet. Class A provides the fewest but largest networks with up to 16 million hosts each. Class B provides more but smaller networks with 65,000 hosts each. Class C provides the most but smallest networks with 254 hosts each. Private IP addresses are reserved for internal networks and cannot be routed on the public internet.
