Introduction of Building Services
BFB 40703 BUILDING SERVICES II
+
What is building
services?
+
Imagine …
In the most fabulous building in the world.
+
Now …
take away the lighting, heating and ventilation,
the lifts and escalators, acoustics, plumbing,
power supply and energy management
systems, the security and safety systems
+
So...
you are left with a cold, dark,
uninhabitable shell.
+
What is building services?
Everything inside a building which makes it safe and
comfortable to be in comes under the title of 'Building
services'.
A building must do what it was designed to do - not just provide
shelter but also be an environment where people can live, work
and achieve.
Building services are what makes a building come to life.
+
What is building services?
Or we can said that:
It is the services required to make the building
functioning as design.
Example
A room temperature is required to keep certain temperature level,
thus we need air conditioning services
A bank building requires safety then it needs security services
A building requires water supply, then it needs plumbing services
Others…

Changes in how we live will effect:
• Building design
• Building functions
• Urban landscape
• Natural environment
How will building serve the ever-changing culture and needs of human….?
How does buildings interact with the natural environment….?

Why do civil engineer need to learn
building services?
Since civil engineer play a significant role in building
construction, by knowing this discipline the engineer
will help to harmonize all parties involved in the
construction process.
Civil engineer also involved in building maintenance
work, thus the knowledge will help the engineer to
understand broader scope of the maintenance works.
The knowledge will make engineers appreciate other
wing of engineering discipline
To give Value Added to civil engineering discipline
+
Roles of a building services engineer
Building services discipline is to ensure cost-effective and
environmentally sound design and maintenance of
energy-using elements in buildings.
Building services engineers have an important role in
developing and maintaining buildings, and their
components, to make the most effective use of natural
resources and protect public safety.
This includes all equipment and materials involved with
heating, lighting, ventilation, air-conditioning, electrical
distribution, water supply, fire protection, safety systems,
lifts and escalators, and even acoustics.
+ Activities of building services engineer will vary according to specialist
area of work and whether you are employed by a single organization or
a consultancy, but tasks typically involve:
advising clients and architects on energy use and conservation
in a range of buildings and sites - increasingly this includes
minimizing the impact of building on the environment;
designing suitable systems, using specialist computer aided
design (CAD) software and other resources;
designing and maintaining automatic, intelligent and
sophisticated control and air conditioning systems;
overseeing and supervising the installation of building systems;
liaising closely with other professionals, including structural
engineers, builders, architects and surveyors, and in-house
project teams;
organizing and assessing the work of contractors;
working with detailed diagrams, plans and drawings;
+
recommends several priority actions for overcoming barriers
mainstreaming, including project screening for climate-related
perspectives on climate change and sustainable development
risk, inclusion of climate impacts in environmental impact
assessments , and shifting emphasis from creating new plans
better implementation of existing measures.
