1 Overview
1.1 Overview
There are two ways to perform operation & maintenance of BTS, as shown in figure 1-
1. One is performed by remote OMCR, through Abis interface between BSC and BTS,
which is the part of whole BSS O&M system. For more details, please see ZXG10-BSS
(V1A) Base station subsystem operation manual. The other is realized by LMT, the
local terminal maintains BTS via LMT through MMI interface of OMU. In this
manual, we will chiefly introduce the local operation and maintenance of BTS.
Abis interface
BTS
Remote O&M station
In GSM system, the operation and maintenance center OMC is used for the control and
maintenance of each device in a communication subsystem. Generally, the switching
system and the base station are maintained separately. The local operation &
maintenance is part of the O&M of the base station system, which is done on the
installation site of BTS equipment. All the devices of equipment can be maintained via
a MMI interface which is provided by LMT. To enable the telecom operator to monitor
and control the whole system, the information to be monitored are transmitted via the
O&M system from the monitored equipment to the background maintenance terminal
and displayed to the administrative personnel, also the administrative personnel can
modify the device configuration at the local maintenance terminal. The local operation
and maintenance system is realized by the OMU unit of BTS.
-1-
1.1.1 Operation & maintenance unit (OMU)
OMU is the O&M unit of BTS, which fulfills the control and maintenance functions of
each unit inside BTS. Functionally, OMU mainly implements the remote operation and
maintenance by BSC and the local operation and maintenance. It accepts the O&M
commands from BSC, fulfills the status management, transmission management, radio
interface management, test management and equipment management of each functional
module inside BTS, realizes the remote O&M function from remote BSC to BTS.
Meanwhile, OMU can also be used to operate and maintain other BTSs under the same
BSC via local O&M interface.
OMU primarily performs O&M for the following internal units of BTS:
2. Performs the corresponding processing for the devices of BTS based on the
O&M instructions issued by BSC.
3. Collects and processes the alarm messages from the devices of BTS and then
reports to BSC.
OMU has corresponding interfaces with the frame unit (FU), carrier unit (CU), clock
unit (CKU), base station interface equipment (BIE), external alarm module (EAM) and
signal distribution unit (SDU), which are used for internal protocol processing and
information exchanging. The OMU communicates each module with polling method.
-2-
Chapter 1 Overview
1. OMU communicates with BSC via the 64k TS at Abis interface, the link layer
adopts LAPD protocol.
2. OMU communicates with FU module via HDLC bus with 1Mbit/s bit rate.
3. OMU communicates with the BIE, CKU, EAM and CU module via HDLC bus
with 64kbps bit rate.
Base station subsystem operation and maintenance center OMCR is used to manage
ZXG10-BSS, realizes operation and maintenance of BSS, includes both BSC and BTS,
the main function includes security management, fault management, performance
management and configuration management.
1. Security management
2. Fault management
Fault management is used to monitor the overall running status of the BSS
system, help maintenance personnel provide realtime maintenance and
recovery. It can display and synchronize BSS fault, fulfills the BSS diagnosis
and test, so fault can be located and handled to ensure the normal operation of
the BSS system.
3. Performance management

4. Configuration management
As the local operation and maintenance system of BTS, the main functions of LMT are
as follows:
3. During operation
If any unrecoverable failure occurs in BTS (e.g., the physical link between BSC
and BTS is damaged), the LMT system needs to be used to implement local
operation and maintenance for BTS. In this case, the LMT system should have
functions like configuration management, attribute or status, alarm query, etc,
and then debugging the BTS system. After the BTS becomes normal, reconnect
to the system, and the BSC will cancel the modification made by LMT, to

LM module is mainly used to support LMT to perform the operation and maintenance
of BTS, including processing the communication flow between LMT and BTS on the
MMI interface, processing the internal communication flow between LM module and
MOs inside BTS, monitoring the hardware modules inside BTS, and collecting the
alarm messages and status change messages of circuit boards, which are reported to
LMT.
LMT is the local O&M module of BTS. Just like BSC, LMT collects the status and
alarm of BTS via OMU, and performs configuration management of BTS when the
BSC and BTS are not connected. Physically, it belongs to PC, and it composes the
O&M terminal together with the operation system of PC.
MMI interface performs such functions as establish links between LMT and LM, , link
holding, transmission control and packing/unpacking of packets, etc.

The software of LMT system is composed of three parts: background O&M software,
foreground/background communication software, and foreground O&M agent
software. In which, the background O&M software and communication software are
installed in a PC or laptop. The foreground O&M agent software and foreground
communication software are included in OMU software.
The foreground O&M agent software is physically located on OMU board, and is used
to support the background for the operation and maintenance of BTS. Its major
functions includes:
2. Process the internal communication flow between OMU and MOs inside BTS.
3. Monitor the hardware modules inside BTS, collect the alarm messages from
circuit boards and then report to the background. The background processes and
displays these messages.
The background O&M software belongs to PC physically, and it constitutes the O&M
terminal together with the operating system of the PC. It provides friendly man-
machine interface, convenient for the operator to monitor and administrate the BTS.
The software interface employs Windows style.

address of the board in LMPortCfg.ini file, as figure 3-4 shows, make change at
BoardIP= “138.1.99.88”, then the program will use the given IP address to
communicate with foreground.
3. Point-to-point method
For the serial port communicates method and TCP/IP method are use serial cable and
network cable respectively, these two methods are only suitable for short distance
operation and maintenance.
Communicates via BSC provides a long distance operation and maintenance solution
for BSC to the SITE belongs to it. To use it, the user only need to install LMT on the
same PC installed with OMCR (the IP address of this PC should be consistency with
the TEST SVR IP address configured by BSC), decide the module, the BSC and the
connected SITE. If the link is in normal condition, user can do remote operation and
maintenance on a controllable SITE in equipment room.

4 Configuration Management
4.1 General
The configuration management of LMT system is classified into three parts:
Equipment management, radio resource configuration management and data
synchronization. The equipment management is implemented by adding new
master/slave racks and adding/removing boards. The radio resource configuration
management is implemented by adding new cells, adding new transceivers and
modifying their parameters. Data synchronization is initiated to synchronize the
changed parameter table of the background database to the foreground database, so as
to avoid synchronizing all the data in each time, hence improving the efficiency.
The operation and maintenance data of OMU for each BTS module are mainly
delivered by BSC via the layer 3 flow of the Abis interface, therefore, the OMU
database servers the function of accessing the various data delivered by BSC. The LMT
operation and maintenance terminal enables the maintenance personnel to inquire the
current resources configuration and parameters setting of each site from the OMU
database and to configure resources and modify parameters in any circumstance.
As the agent of the BSC, OMU manage the MO on BTS. The DBS of OMU is mainly
used to save the important information of BTS MO. The database synchronization is to
keep the consistency of the LMT local database and foreground database, so users can
inquiry and configure the BTS MO from LMT.

The first step to configure the radio resource is to add new cells. In each station, only a
maximum of three cells are allowed. Some important parameters of the cell are
settable, while other parameters can only be viewed by the user, and can not be
modified. Default options are provided in parameter setting. The second step is to add
new transceivers. TRXs in the physical configuration of plates are listed thereinto to let
the user select TRXs for different cells. There are a variety of parameters to be set for
TRX, such as Fu, CU. The third step is to create the combination mode of the 8 TS
channels. The channel combination is directly created by the channel creator. The forth
step is to set the carrier frequency, including the selection of the absolute channel No.
of BCCH within the cell and the frequency of other TRX. The fifth step is frequency
planning which mainly refers to the planning of frequency in no frequency hopping and
RF hopping.

2. CCCH Structure
There are five CCCH configuration modes, as shown in the figure 4-20. In
which, when CCCH uses a physical channel and shares it with SDCCH, the
channel capacity of CCCH is the least. When CCCH uses a physical channel
and does not share it with SDCCH, the channel capacity of CCCH is relatively
small. In other cases, the more physical channels the CCCH uses, the larger the
capacity is. The configuration of this parameter is determined by the service
carrier based on the traffic model of the cell. In practice, if there are one or two
TRXs in the cell, it is recommended for the configuration of CCCH to use one
basic physical channel and share it with SDCCH. If the number of TRXs is 3 or
4, it is recommended for the configuration of CCCH to use one basic physical
channel and not to share it with SDCCH.
Since the control channel is assigned strictly to time slot 0 of the BCCH carrier
frequency configured in the cell, the maximum number of TCH channels is 7
when there is only one TRX, i.e., assigned to time slots 1--7. When there are 2
TRXs, the maximum number of TCH channels is 15. The rest can be deduced
from this.
It refers to the number of already configured TRXs within the specified cell
(BTS), which is consistent with that indicated in the configuration tree on the
left. Each TRX can handle 8 channels, with each channel corresponding to a
time slot.
Click “Application” button to list out the transceiver No., channel No channel
combination condition of the currently selected cell.

6 Clock Calibration
6.1 General
Currently, CKU has two kinds of working mode: phase lock mode (synchronized with
BSC) and free oscillation mode. When work in phase lock mode, such as lock, save the
input value of voltage control oscillation into FLASH register. When work in free
oscillation mode, CKU control the voltage oscillation with the D/A value in FLASH
register.
Before CKU leave factory, the output of the clock is already be calibrated to ensure the
13M output precision. But the output of CKU clock maybe not accurate due to aging or
other reasons. So calibration tools should be provided on site for CKU clock output
calibration. Here, we provide tools in LMT, user can use the peripheral meter to realize
CKU calibration.
High performance
frequency meter
-----------
The principle of CKU calibration is by the communication between LMT software and
CKU, and saved in CKU used for free oscillation.
As figure 6-1 shows, CKU calibration needs three parts of software: LMT program
runs on background; foreground agent runs on OMU plate; calibration program runs on
CKU, used to receive and execute the instructions from LMT.
