Channel preparation

❏ Group all of the instrument groups to individual aux channels

❏ Create a ‘Sub Mix’ aux and send each group channel to this aux

❏ Create a ‘Reference’ channel and send it directly to the master out

❏ Create your effect sends (Delay, Short Reverb, Room Reverb)

❏ Next time, load up a template (create your own or use mine)

Organisation

❏ Make sure all of your channels are clearly labelled

❏ Make sure your channels are logically ordered

❏ Give each channel type it’s own color

❏ Add markers for each section of the song (Intro, Verse, Chorus etc)

❏ Join regions

Gain staging and balancing

❏ Use a gain/trim plugin to put the channels in the -18dBFS sweet spot

❏ Balance the entire mix (spend at least 5 minutes doing this)

Surgical EQ

❏ Load up a fully parametric EQ

❏ Remove any room resonances (boost and sweep if necessary)

❏ Remove any unpleasant mic characteristics

Compression

❏ Find the right attack and release times

❏ Bring the ratio down and adjust to taste

❏ Adjust the threshold until you get the right amount of gain reduction

Tonal EQ

❏ Load up an EQ (preferably analogue modelling)

❏ If needed, apply cuts/boosts to improve the tone

Final Checks

❏ Check the mix in mono

❏ Listen through and take notes on anything that needs adjusting
