Machine Foundation

The document discusses machine foundations, which must support dynamic forces from machines. There are three types of machines: 1) those with periodic unbalanced forces like engines below 60 rpm, 2) those with impact loads like hammers from 60-150 blows/min, and 3) high speed machines like turbines over 3000 rpm. It also defines key terms related to vibration including periodic motion, frequency, free and forced vibrations, resonance, damping, and degrees of freedom.

¾ Machine foundations are subjected to the dynamic forces caused by
machine. These dynamic forces are transmitted to the foundations
supporting the machine.

¾ Due to moving parts of machine some eccentricity develops and that

results to oscillating force or moments.
Basically there are 3 types of machines :-

1. Machine which produces periodic unbalanced force, such as

reciprocating engines and compressors. Speed of such machines are
less than 60 rpm. The rotary motion is converted to translatory
motion.
2. Machine which produces impact loads, such as forge hammers and
punch presses. Dynamic forces attain the peak value in very short
time and dies gradually. The response is pulsating curves. It
vanishes before the next pulse. Speed 60 – 150 blows/min.
3. High speed machines such as turbines and rotary compressors. The
speed of such machines is very high nearly 3000 rpm.
Basic definitions:-

1. Vibration or oscillations – It is time-dependent, repeated motion of

translational and rotational type.

2. Periodic motion – Repeats itself periodically after in equal time

intervals.

3. Cycles – The motion completed in the period.

4. Frequency – The no. of cycles of motions in unit time. Expressed in

Hz (cycles/sec).

5. Free vibrations – caused vibration due to Inherent properties of

system itself without any external force.
6. Forced vibrations – Under the influence of external forces.

7. Resonance – When the frequency of exciting force is equal to natural

frequency of the system. Amplitude is very large.

8. Damping – The resistance to motion which develops due to friction.

9. Degrees of freedom – The no. of independent co-ordinates required

to describe the motions of the system.
