21st Poem

The poem expresses a lover's longing for their physically distant partner, communicating through different technologies despite the costs. Each line conveys the person's affection for their lover. While technology allows bridging the gap between distant lovers, nothing replaces being physically together. The infrequent use of English terms like "cell phone" and "Internet" act as metaphors for communication. Overall, the poem explores the theme of physical distance in a relationship and how technology enables affection between distant lovers, though it cannot replace physical proximity.

Teknolohiya Sang Gugma VS. Physical Proximity

By Dr. Jesus Insilada

Dr. Jesus C. Insilada’s Teknolohiya Sang Gugma vs. Physical Proximity is a

poem that expresses a lovers longing as he endure a relationship with a partner
who happens to be physically distant. Each line is an expression of a person’s
affection from his distant lover that he communicates with through different
forms of communications, despite the prices that they have to pay. The poem
also narrates on how technology has been a way of bridging the gaps between
two lovers who are geographically distant from each other; each line is an
explanation as to how communication is possible and achieved in a long distance
affair. But there is still no better way of expressing one’s affection than being
there beside your love one physically.

Much of the language in the composition is Hiligaynon. The very infrequent

use of English words is only to express concept which do not have perfect
equivalents in Hiligaynon words such as cell phone, Internet, Email, YouTube, Fb
wall, upload. Obviously, these words signify communication. Therefore, it can be
said that these words are metaphor of communication. These terms can be seen
throughout the poem, which expresses the concept of a physically distant lover
and his feelings of longing. The metaphor, utilized by the author, is very much
effective and coherent with the theme being expressed in the poem. However,
despite the use of these metaphors to express one’s affection, there’s still no
better way of expressing one’s love than being there physically.

Ang nagpabatid ng mga kaalaman

Sa atin at sa buong sambayan
Nagtuturo ng magandang asal
At itinuturing na pangalawang magulang

Sila ay lubos na iginagalang

Ng lahat ng nilalang
Ng lahat na noo’y
Mga batang walang muwang lamang

Kadalasan sila ay mabait

Ngunit minsa’y nagsusungit
Ngunit sa likod nito
Ay mga labing masaya at nakangiti

Tayo ay natututo
Sa kanilang mga itinuturo
Tayo ay kanilang sinasagip
Upang sa tamang landas di malihis
