“SODOMITE: a sin or not?
”
by: Loubert John P. Go
This question has been asked to me by some people since I was in high school. I just
answer them through my logical understanding about their status. But what they want to know is
on what the Bible says. So, I took a self bible research about the answer of this question
In today’s generation, sodomites are very rampant in the society. (Sodomite is the term
used to refer the people who belong to the third sex.) In fact, they are shouting for equality and
aiming to legalize same sex marriage. Wherever you go around the world, you can meet these
people. They have a big involvement into different social activities. They are somehow,
contributing many things in the society. But, the question is, “Is being a homosexual a sin or
not?” This is the question which will be answered by this article in a biblical way.
Going back to the very beginning of our history, the Divine Creator made Adam and Eve
with the rest of other creatures. The holy scripture says:
“God created mankind in His image; in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.”
(Genesis 1:27)
The bottom line of this verse is that we are all created after the Divine Creator’s likeness
and image. However, it also emphasizes that He created only man and woman. There is no other
sex between male and female. It is clear that there is no homosexual (lesbian and gay). This is a
firm biblical proof that there’s no other gender or sex between being a man and a woman.
When does it start, then? Well, its origin is not the concern of this writing. But in the
Bible, there’s an account which talks about sexual act that makes God angry. In the Old
Testament, God punished the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. He destroyed these cities because
of their immorality. This is a sexual immorality.
There is no doubt that same sex intercourse was already happening even before the time
of Jesus. In the scripture, it says:
“They called to Lot and said to him, ‘Where are the men who came to your house tonight? Bring them out so that
we may have sexual relations with them’.” (Genesis 19:5)
When Lot took some visitors in his place, the townsmen, both young and old, asked Lot to
present to them the visitors in order to have sex. As a consequence of their wickedness, God
destroyed their cities and they all died. Indeed, God is not in favour for such act because He
destroyed the two cities. He was glad on what they did and asked. Imagine, they asked to have
sex intercourse with other men.
“No man is to have sexual relations with another man; God hates that.” (Leviticus 18:22)
This passage is another proof that God forbids anyone to have sexual relations and
intercourse of same sex. It is against His will.
God repeated this commandment to His people which is to avoid sexual relations for
same sex. He said to Moses;
“If a man has sexual relations with another man, they have done disgusting thing, and both shall be put to death.
They are responsible of their own death.” (Leviticus 20:13)
It is being repeated in order to give an emphasis that people should never do such disgusting
thing. Take note that not just one who will take the consequence, instead, both parties are obliged
to take the punishment of God. Again, it is clear that God is not in favour of it.
In the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, he wrote:
“Do you not know that unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God?.....nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor
sodomites nor thieves...will inherit the kingdom of God.”
St. Paul gave a warning to what possible consequence an unjust man gets. And one of these
unjust men is the sodomites. In other words, God strictly disallows them to get in the kingdom.
In the book of Dante Alegrhei which is entitled “Inferno”, there is a place for the
sodomites. Meaning to say, being a sodomite is a sin.
I don’t make my own judgment on this. It is just a biblical explanation of what a
sodomite gains when he/she commits same sex intercourse. Nevertheless, it’s not yet too late to
change. As they said, there is always a room in our heart to change. As what the scripture says:
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that He will forgive your sins.”
It’s not yet too late for these people to change. They have just to repent so that they will be
forgiven. And the meaning of this repentance is not to do the same thing anymore. God doesn’t
hate us. It is our sins which he hates to. For He is a loving God, He welcomes anyone who
repents.
It’s a time for you to judge if being a sodomite is a sin or not base on the biblical texts.
