Introduction

The term 'mental health' is sometimes used to mean an absence of a mental disorder.
Besides that, mental health can affect daily life, relationships, and even physical
health. Mental health also includes a person's ability to enjoy their life. According to
the (WHO, (2004)) said that mental health is a state of well-being in which the
individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can
work productively and able to make a contribution to their community.

In fact, regarding well-being as a key aspect of mental health is difficult to

reconcile with the many challenging life situations in which well-being may even be
unhealthy. Most people would consider as mentally unhealthy an individual
experiencing a state of well-being while killing several persons during a war action,
and would regard as healthy a person feeling desperate after being fired from their job
in a situation in which occupational opportunities are scarce.

Therefore, stress is one of the mental disorders which is in a medical context

stress is a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension.
Stress can come from external factors which is from the environment, psychological
or social situations. It is also can come from internal factors where illness or from a
medical procedure. Stress can cause or influence the course of many medical
conditions including psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Medical problems can include poor healing, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood
pressure, poorly controlled diabetes and many other conditions. Stress management is
recognized as an effective treatment modality to include pharmacologic and non-
pharmacologic components.

However, the basic ability to function in social roles and to participate in

meaningful social interactions is an important aspect of mental health and particularly
contributes to resilience against distress. In addition, social exclusion and
stigmatization often impair social participation, so any definition of mental health
alluding to this aspect has to avoid “blaming the victim” and to carefully analyze
social patterns of stigmatization, discrimination and exclusion that impair
participation, Heinz A (2011).
Background study

As usually, the people said of the word ‘stress' brings thoughts such as increased rate
of depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and other potentially life-threatening
issues to one's mind. Frequently, a student rushes from one end of campus to the
other, trying to make their next class on time. Since classes are scheduled sequential,
there is less or no time to even eat. Moreover, they have also got many assignments to
complete, so it looks like they will not be getting much sleep tonight. Due to the fact
that, if student get extreme levels of stress can hinder studies effectiveness and lead to
poor academic performance and attrition on A publication on stress by the University
of New York (Retrieved March, 2016)

According Saha (2017) the statistics published by National Crime Records

Bureau, there is one student every hour that commits suicide. The bureau registered
1.8% students who committed suicide due to failing in examinations and an 80% rise
in suicide rates during a one-year time frame. Depression, anxiety, behavioural
problems, irritability, and are few of the many problems reported in students with high
academic stress (Deb, Strodl & Sun, 2015;Verma, Sharma & Larson, 2002).
Incidences of depression were also found among stressful adolescents as it is linked
with inability to concentrate, fear of failure, negative evaluation of future (Busari,
2012).

Stress related physical illnesses that will bring a huge impact on human health.
The physical impact such as heart attacks, chronic headaches that regulate heart rate,
blood pressure and digestive system (Farlex, 2015). Moreover, stress is influencing
human mental health. Besides, according Mtstcil (2015) when stress occurred, people
have difficulty thinking clearly, dealing with problems or handling the situation.
Stress has an adverse impact on academic performance. They are suffering illness and
health problems. This physical and mental effects bring long stress can lead to mental
slowness, difficult concentrating to work, difficulty thinking in a logical sequence and
forgetfulness (Bressert, 2015). Stress to student which are affecting the academic
performance and health problem.

Other than that, stress brought impact on health, such as headache, chest pain and
sleep problems. The impact affecting the academic performance and increase the
stress of student, all these are directly influencing the completion of work and causing
a assignment delay. So, stress factor should be identified to reduce the stress of
student. if stress factors are identified, it should able to avoid and to reduce rather than
to worsen the stress phenomenon. Therefore, stress can be properly managed by
UTHM student.

Due to such problems, a study of stress level of UTHM student is important to be

carried out. This is essential to identify factors of stress and method to release stress
of UTHM student. By addressing out, this may help in releasing the stress of UTHM
student.

Problem Statement

Mental health problems among university students are a problem that will strike
students in the first place. Among the effects of mental stress is depression, declining
academic achievement and many other negative effects that may impede the
continuation of the learning process. Therefore, the level of mental health awareness
needs to be taken into account so that students are not disturbed to continue learning.
The results of the 2017 National Health and Morality Review (NHMS) statistics show
that the state of mental health among adolescents is alarming. This can harm the
student and adversely affect the student's performance and future. Therefore, to
improve the quality of student education, the level of awareness of mental health
needs to be implemented in early childhood so that mental problems involving
students do not increase each year.

Limitation of study

The researcher faced many limitations to complete this study. One of the reasons is
because this study only took two weeks to complete. This means that the researcher
only has a short time of period to analyze this study and deal with some challenges.
Other than that, this study is also limited due to the financial constraint because the
researcher is a student and do not have well financial support in order to finish the
task.

Besides that, the researcher does not have enough experience to carry out the
research because the researcher is still new with the research format and also
procedures. It was a big challenging for the researcher to produce a good research.

Organization of the study

This study is compounded of five chapters, which are presented below in figure 1.
This study starts with explaining introduction, the background of the study and then
this background is narrowed down to the problem statement, aim, objectives,
significant of the study, some theoretical definitions, hypothesis, research questions,
the scope of the study, organization of study, limitations and summary.

Chapter two deals with the Literature review of the study. Besides, In Chapter
three we opted different research methodology, which includes quantitative research,
research approach, data collection, sampling size and population of the study.

Chapter four includes the Data analysis which is the data collected from the
students during the questionnaires . Chapter five is dedicated to findings and
conclusion on the result of the data analysis, as well as recommendations are also
given here for the future to improve the quality of study in this field. A reference list
