...there happened a story
you must see to believe.
Who 2: Way up in the mountains,
in the high range of Pontoos...
...lay the small town of Whoville:
The home of the Whos.
Who 3: Ask any Who, and they'll have this to say:
Who 4: "There is no place like Whoville
around Christmas Day."
Who 3: Every window was flocked,
every lamppost was dressed...
...and the Whoville band marched
in their Christmasy best.
ALL: (Walking around and greeting oneanother) Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Who 5: May Day was fine,
and Easter was pleasant...
...and every Saint Fizzin's day,
they ate a Fizz pheasant.
Who 6: But every Who knew,
from their twelve toes to their snout...
...they loved Christmas the most,
without a single Who doubt.
ALL: Every Who down in Who-ville Liked Christmas a lot.
SONG: Year 5 - It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
ALL: Yes, Every Who down in Who-ville Liked Christmas a lot.
Who 7: But the Grinch, who lived just north of Who-ville, Did NOT!
Who 8: The Grinch hated Christmas!
The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don't ask why.
No one quite knows the reason.
Who 9: It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
Who 10: But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
Who 11: But, whatever the reason, his heart or his shoes,
he stood there on Christmas Eve, HATING the Whos.
Who 12: Staring down from his cave with a sour, Grinchy frown,
at the warm lighted windows below in their town.
For he knew every Who down in Who-ville beneath
Was busy now, hanging a mistletoe wreath.
Grinch: And they're hanging their stockings!
Quotations Who: He snarled with a sneer,
Grinch: Tomorrow is Christmas! It's practically here!
Quotations Who: Then he growled, with his Grinch fingers nervously drumming,
Grinch: I MUST find some way to stop Christmas from coming!
Who 13: For, tomorrow, he knew...
Who 14: All the Who girls and boys
would wake bright and early.
They'd rush for their toys! And then!
Who 15: Oh, the noise! Oh, the Noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!
Who 14: That's one thing he hated!
Who 15: The NOISE!
Who 16: NOISE!
Who 15: NOISE!
Who 16: NOISE!
Who 15: Then the Whos, young and old, would sit down to a feast.
Who 16: And they'd feast!
Who 15: And they'd feast!
Who 16: And they'd FEAST!
Who 15: FEAST!
Who 16: FEAST!
Who 15: FEAST!
Who 16: They would feast on Who-pudding, and rare Who-roast beast
Which was something the Grinch couldn't stand in the least!
Who 17: And THEN They'd do something He liked least of all!
Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small,
Who 18: would stand close together, with Christmas bells ringing.
They'd stand hand-in-hand…
ALL: And the Whos would start singing!
SONG: Rocking around the Christmas tree
Who 19: They'd sing!
And they'd sing!
And they'd SING! SING! SING! SING!
Who 20: And the more the Grinch thought of this Who-Christmas-Sing,
Quotations Who: The more the Grinch thought
Grinch: I must stop this whole thing!
Why, for fifty-three years I've put up with it now!
I MUST stop this Christmas from coming!
...But HOW?
Who 21: Then he got an idea!
An awful idea!
ALL: THE GRINCH GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!
Grinch: I know just what to do!
Quotations Who: The Grinch laughed in his throat.
Who 22: And he made a quick Santy Claus hat and a coat.
Quotations Who: And he chuckled, and clucked,
Grinch: What a great Grinchy trick!
With this coat and this hat,
I look just like Saint Nick!
All I need is a reindeer.
Quotations Who: The Grinch looked around.
But, since reindeer are scarce,
there was none to be found.
Who 23: Did that stop the old Grinch...?
Grinch: No!
Quotations Who: The Grinch simply said…
Grinch: If I can't find a reindeer, I'll make one instead!
Who 24: So he called his dog, Max.
(Grinch whistles to Max)
Max: Woof
Who 1: Then he took some red thread.
And he tied a big horn on the top of his head.
Who 2: THEN He loaded some bags
And some old empty sacks
On a ramshackle sleigh
And he hitched up old Max.
Quotations Who: Then the Grinch said
Grinch: Giddap!
Who 3: And the sleigh started down
toward the homes where the Whos lay a-snooze in their town.
Who 4: All their windows were dark.
Quiet snow filled the air.
All the Whos were all dreaming
sweet dreams without care
SONG: Year 4 Snow is falling
Who 5: When he came to the first little house on the square.
Grinch: This is stop number one
Quotations Who: The old Grinchy Claus hissed
Who 6: And he climbed to the roof, empty bags in his fist.
Who 7: Then he slid down the chimney. A rather tight pinch.
But, if Santa could do it
then so could the Grinch
Who 8: He got stuck only once, for a moment or two.
Then he stuck his head out of the fireplace flue
where the little Who stockings all hung in a row.
Grinch: These stockings
Quotations Who: he grinned
Grinch: are the first things to go!
Who 9: Then he slithered and slunk, with a smile most unpleasant,
Around the whole room, and he took every present!
Who 10: Pop guns!
Who 11: And bicycles!
Who 10: Roller skates!
Who 11: Drums!
Who 10: Checkerboards!
Who 11: Tricycles!
Who 10: Popcorn!
Who 11: And plums!
Who 12: And he stuffed them in bags.
Then the Grinch, very nimbly,
Stuffed all the bags, one by one,
up the chimney!
SONG: Year 3 – You’re a mean one Mr Grinch
Who 13: Then he slunk to the icebox.
He took the Whos' feast!
Who 14: He took the Who-pudding,
He took the roast beast!
Who 13: He cleaned out that icebox as quick as a flash.
Who 14: Why, that Grinch even took their last can of Who-hash!
Who 15: Then he stuffed all the food up the chimney with glee.
Grinch: And NOW!
Quotations Who: grinned the Grinch
Grinch: I will stuff up the tree!
Who 16: And the Grinch grabbed the tree, and he started to shove
When he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove.
Who 17: He turned around fast, and he saw a small Who!
Little Cindy-Lou Who
who was not more than two.
Who 18: The Grinch had been caught by this tiny Who daughter
who'd got out of bed for a cup of cold water.
Quotations Who: She stared at the Grinch and said
Cindy-Lou Who: Santy Claus, why?
Why are you taking our Christmas tree? WHY?
Who 19: But, you know,
that old Grinch was so smart and so slick.
He thought up a lie,
he thought it up quick!
Grinch: Why, my sweet little tot
Quotations Who: the fake Santy Claus lied
Grinch: There's a light on this tree that won't light on one side.
So I'm taking it home to my workshop my dear.
I'll fix it up there. Then I'll bring it back here.
Who 20: And his fib fooled the child.
Then he patted her head
and he got her a drink
and he sent her to bed.
Who 21: And when Cindy-Lou Who
went to bed with her cup,
Who 22: HE went to the chimney and stuffed
the tree up!
Who 23: Then the last thing he took
was the log for their fire!
Who 24: Then he went up the chimney, himself,
the old liar.
Who 1: On their walls he left nothing but hooks and some wire.
Who 2: And the one speck of food that he left in the house
was a crumb that was even too small for a mouse.
Who 3: Then He did the same thing to the other Whos' houses.
Leaving crumbs much too small For the other Whos' mouses!
Who 4: It was quarter past dawn...
All the Whos, still a-bed,
All the Whos, still a-snooze
When he packed up his sled
Who 5: Packed it up with their presents!
The ribbons! The wrappings!
The tags! And the tinsel!
The trimmings! The trappings!
Who 6: Three thousand feet up!
Up the side of Mt. Crumpit
He rode with his load
to the tiptop to dump it!
Grinch: Pooh-Pooh to the Whos!
Quotation Who: he was grinch-ish-ly humming
Grinch: They're finding out now
that no Christmas is coming!
They're just waking up! I know just what they'll do!
Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
then the Whos down in Who-ville
will all cry Boo-Hoo!
That's a noise,
Quotations Who: grinned the Grinch
Grinch: That I simply MUST hear!
Quotations Who: So he paused.
And the Grinch put his hand to his ear.
Who 7: And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low.
Then it started to grow...
Who 8: But the sound wasn't sad!
Who 9: Why, this sound sounded merry!
Who 10: It couldn't be so!
Who 11: But it WAS merry!
ALL: VERY!
Who 12: He stared down at Who-ville!
The Grinch popped his eyes!
Then he shook!
What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Who 13: Every Who down in Who-ville,
the tall and the small,
was singing!
Without any presents at all!
Who 14: He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming!
It came!
Somehow or other,
it came just the same!
Who 15: And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Quotations Who: Stood puzzling and puzzling
Grinch: How could it be so?
It came with out ribbons!
It came without tags!
It came without packages, boxes or bags!
Who 16: And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore,
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
Grinch: Maybe Christmas
Quotations Who: he thought
Grinch: doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!
Who 17: And what happened then...?
Who 18: Well...in Who-ville they say
that the Grinch's small heart
Grew three sizes that day!
Who 19: And the minute his heart didn't feel quite so tight,
he whizzed with his load through the bright morning light
Who 20: And he brought back the toys!
And the food for the feast!
Who 21: And he... HE HIMSELF...!
The Grinch carved the roast beast!
SONG ALL: It’s the most wonderful time of the year
