In India this industry has its potential in meeting enormous demand of goods both in the
domestic and in the international market. This industry in India is the backbone of manufacturing

OPERATION MANAGEMENT
Production Department of horn division of Roots Industries India Limited
consists of the following sections:

Inventory management
Shelves or rack stocking:
They store the raw materials in a rack based on the weight of the material. Mostly raw
materials are stored as rollsheets and it is moved through the help of machines. There are 10
trolleys filled on each day but only 5 is used in the assembly line. So, if there is any less stock or
the regular suppliers is late to delivery their parts, the assembly will always have a two to three
days of stocks.
PRESS SHOP
OBJECTIVE:
To produce the component by using different operations as per the requirement from the
production planning and control.
ACTIVITIES:
Production planning and control is the primary input to press shop. PPC Prepare the
component requirement plan. A monthly plan is given to the press shop. Based on the plan day-
wise production is prepared. A capacity plan which checks for the availability of tools,
machine, man power and number of working days. If there is a lacking then a contingency plan
is made and necessary action is taken out.
The monthly production work is given to the supervisor who decides which machine has
to be loaded. In press shop operations like blanking, drawing, restrike, piercing, trimming etc.,

in press shop produces so many components diaphragm, tone disc, point plate, point holder,
and housing with SCR.
During the process if any problems occur the component will be drop the Non conformity
box. After inspected the corrected work piece it will dispatch to the powder coating, plating,
and directed to assembly.

Per day the total production of horn is 22,000 in Thoppampatti branch, Coimbatore.
COIL WINDING
OBJECTIVE:
To maintain production of the coil winding, point plate and point holder and
deliver to assembly department at right time.
ACTIVITIES:
▪ Coil winding is done on the spool which is produced from “ROOTS POLYCRAFT”.
▪ Based on Dimensions Two type of spools are used , they are
➢ Circular
➢ Rectangular
▪ Coil made with different materials. Generally three types of materials used , they are
➢ Aluminum
➢ Copper
➢ Copper- clad
▪ Number of turns of the coil differs for varying diameters of the spool. Mostly copper is
used for winding process.
▪ At some cases, Aluminum is used for winding process according to the customer
requirement. The gauge range is also place important factor in coil winding
▪ The main problem raised in riveting is gap in rivet and crack.

▪ After the winding process the resistance of the coil is tested. The resistance tester is
used for check the resistance of the coil.
▪ Heat sealing process is carried out on spool is done to avoid slipping of the edges of
coil from spool.
▪ Then enamel of the wire is removed (manually) by using strip and as well as chemical
to ensure the conductivity/continuity.
▪ The chemical used is ENAMEL ENDCONNECTOR REWINER -101. The time
required for the process is 3-6 seconds.
▪ Rectangular spools outsides are moulded with vertical moulding machine.
▪ The crimping process is also done at the department. Cable lock side and production
side terminals processed at the stage.
▪ The process time is 40 seconds and air pressure required is 3.5 bar.
▪ Point plate assembly is carried out in this department. Tungsten tip used for riveting.
▪ Riveting of the contact points over point plate and point holder is done.
POWDER COATING
OBJECTIVES:
To provide aesthetic look of the horn by coating on the surface and to improve the
corrosion resistance of the component
ACTIVITIES:
Total time required for the whole process to be completed is 2.5 hours. Around
10,000 components are produced in one shift. Concentration of chemicals and pH of water is
maintained throughout the process for maximum efficiency of powder coating. Tone disc and
Housing are parts which are usually subjected for powder coating. The pH value is
maintained at 5-7 at all stages of water rinsing. The speed of conveyor is 1.3 meter per
minute. All the parameters in the Process data check sheet are checked and verified and
signed before the start of each shift.

ASSEMBLY DEPARTMENT
OBJECTIVE:
To assemble the horn by receiving components from various departments, tune and test the
horn for customer requirement and pack the assembled horns and to send them for barrier
audit and despatch.
OVERVIEW:
• 3 types of horns , namely
❖ Wind tone type
❖ Vibrating type
❖ Electronic type
• Trumpet type horns are named as WINDTONE and are one of the most fast moving
and highly demanded products in market. These kinds of horns can be found in
VOLKSWAGEN, SKODA. Etc.,
• Vibrating type horns are named as VIBROSONIC, VIBROMINI, and MEGASONIC.
Etc and is one of the loudest horns produced in RIL and sound pressure confines to the
Government Regulations.
• Electronic type horns are named as SMARTONE which uses diodes in its working and
is known for its endurance. This type of horn is supplied as OE to one of the largest
automobile manufacturer TKML (Toyota Kirloskar Motor Limited)
• Depending on the market, there are three types,

pressure used for tightening or pressing the component. Any component which is
assembled failing the operating conditions should be placed in NC box. Otherwise the
pneumatic devices will not work.
✓ When more than 5 defective products are found during testing, the assembly line is
stopped, FEEDBACK TO CAUSE process is done and each station is analyzed.

MARKETING MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVE:
To achieve targets, promoting the products and maintain proper customer interaction,
offering suitable product and ensuring time delivery.
ACTIVITIES:
➢ Marketing department maintains the Invoice and despatching bills of the customers.
➢ Developing the new ways to sell the products.

➢ From dispatching section they receive a mail about the Net weight, Gross weight, No
of boxes to be despatched.

OEM Replacement
Replacement market:
It is another term for aftermarket. It is a market for replacement on repair parts.
Equipment or accessories for the part for the maintenance or enhancement of the original
Products, after it has been sold to the customer. It is a term commonly used for the automobile
industry.
a. Replacement parts: These parts replace the ones provided by the Original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs), once the original ones wear out. For examples, it may be required to
replace clutch plates of an automobile after certain years of using the car. Thus, the new clutch
plates will have to be bought from the aftermarket.
b. Accessories: These are add-on parts, which are purchased for enhancing comfort,
luxury, performance or safety. For example, if a customer does not opt for a car model with an
inbuilt factory fitted music system, she will have to buy a new car audio system from the after
market for car audio systems. Similarly, adding decorative vinyl or stickers to the car exteriors will
also have to be done in the car exterior modification aftermarket.

ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING(OEM):
The OEM is the original producer of a vehicle's components, and so OEM car
parts are identical to the parts used in producing a vehicle. In the automotive industry, this
term generally refers to automotive manufacturers. It can also refer to the manufacturer of
origin for any product. OEMs are Manufacture who Resell another company’s Products
under their own name and branding. For example roots manufacture horns for the BOSCH.
Marketing Strategy:
By this strategy, the products are made available to the customers through dealers
who are all branched across India and globe with 40 domestic and 25 internationals.
The company provides the products to the dealers who meet the customers who are
in need for the machine itself seal the deal. The dealers are authorized one and are
responsible for a company representative.

how the machine is manufacture thus creating transparency within consumers and

Sales promotion:
Sales promotion is done mainly by establishing small stalls in the
exhibition or at an auto fest. Roots provide free service campaign to maximize the sales
of their products. Roots continuously collects data regarding their rival companies
(Example:- Hella) and they learn about their new product launch and their upcoming

new features and based on this information collected they are able to strategically price
their product so as to improve sales by gaining customer’s attention.
PRODUCT PROMOTION
The customers or traders available in international market are reached through auto-
expos, automotive exhibitions and various other ways of advertising.
CONTACT ESTABLISHMENT
The company establishes contact with the customer or trader through mails, visiting
cards got during exhibitions.
CUSTOMER INTERESTED
The feedback from the customer is obtained by giving samples for free of cost. Based
on the feedback the product is manufactured.
The customer may have different requirements on the product like aesthetic, function,
etc. Based on that the design feasibility is checked and then product is manufactured.
NEGOTIATION
The customer decides the mode of shipping which determines the cost of the purchase.
It is based on INCO terms.

HR MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVE:
To enhance the skills of all employers and to establish and maintain a
procedure for HR management.
Performance appraisal:
In Bull performance appraisal of employee takes place both:
• Half-yearly
• Annually
Rating scale from 1 to 5 is used to rate the performance of all the employees.
Half-yearly PA:
The HR department daily collects data containing the in and out timing of the
employee, time taken to finish a work, how quality is the job done, no.of days present in the
organization, overtime during the work hours, work culture and relation with colleagues and
the supervisors through the SAP Modules. These data are then verified and the increment
based on the performance appraisal is done.

Annual appraisal:
The SAP module for HR Management will compare the previous half year’s
data and the growth chart will be plotted and reported. Annual appraisal is helpful in
evaluating promotion scale in the organization.

Work Culture:
The ROOTS INDUSTRIES workers are emotionally bound with their assigned to, they
feel passionately about their goals and their commitment towards the organization's vision and
mission. On Every Day there is a meeting held at the morning where they pledge the oath and
discuss about their difficulties, mistakes, errors and all the other things that are effective in the
company’s productivity.
A different thing what we identified is that any mistake made by the workers intentionally
or unintentionally are identified and they are made to take on oath by standing on sign board

Induction or orientation training:
Induction or orientation training in the Roots Industries is making a new employees to
familiarize in his job settings and additionally they teaches about the procedures, rules and
regulations of the organization when a newly appointed employee reports for work, the Roots
Industries human resources management will help him to get acquainted with the work
environment and the fellow employees. The training and development wing give the training for
three days in the first or second week of his joining.
In Roots Industries, the induction programme is formal with a duration of three days. It
need not necessarily be given on the day when the new employees joins. But if a formal course is
to be attended after one or two weeks on the job, the initial Introduction and the immediately
needed information may be given by the supervisor to the new employee.

DATA MANAGEMENT
Database Management system plays a vital role in running the company smoothly.
The company put its whole trust towards an ERP software called SAP. It is designed in a
way that it connects all the departments Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and the
Production. From the raw materials to the finished product everything is recorded in this
software in different modules. Each module helps us to communicate across different
sectors of the company.
Types of Modules:
Marketing Modules:
In this module the company uses the data of the production to analyze the company position
in the market. Helps to handle the data more user friendly when compared to manual data.
Finance Modules:
This type module creates balance sheet of the expenses which happens while
running the company. The cash transfer between suppliers, customers and the company
are recorded in this module.
Production Module:
Production sector is the main purpose of using the SAP module. Availability
of Raw Materials, availability of inventories, requirements, Economic Order
quantity, Reorder quantity, Economic batch quantity everything is ordered through
the SAP software.

The software will send these data to various different modules and the
management confirms and allocates funds and orders to the respective modules.
In this way there will be constant data flow between sectors which gives
better communication between them enhancing the product value.
IT SYSTEMS:
Data security officer and Data base administrator is responsible for IT policies, internal
policy, E- mail policy, security policy, control of server, Internal communication, Lotus notes
administration and maintenance and development, training the user on the above, software
adequacy and control. Hardware engineer is responsible for the Hardware maintenance of
servers, computers, printers and IT related equipments, installation and maintenance and up
keeping of LAN and WAN.
The employees in and out time is all recorded in SAP software. Leave applications for
the employee are applied through online and all the process are carried out through SAP
software.

Roots Industries India Limited's operating revenues range is INR 100 crore - 500 crore for the
financial year ending on 31 March, 2018. It's EBITDA has increased by 7.31 % over the previous year.
At the same time, it's book net worth has increased by 11.51 %. Other performance and liquidity ratios
are available here.
The total paid-up capital is INR 1.60 cr. The last reported AGM (Annual General Meeting) of the
company, per our records, was held on 26 September, 2019. Also, as per our records, its last balance sheet
was prepared for the period ending on 31 March, 2019.

10 years.
Financial Manager should ensure the payments of debit and credit of the company. Collect the
dues and recievables.
Credit Rating:
Rating committee M/s Care ratings limited after due consideration has reaffirmed the
ratings for long term bank facilities as CARE A-positive (single A: outlook: positive) and short
term bank facilities as Care A1(A one).

MAJOR LEARNINGS FROM THE INDUSTRY
IMMERSION PROJECT
• During this industrial visit we come to know the contribution of each department to make a
single product successfully in the market. And also, the struggle of the company due to the
failure of a simple part.
• Team discussions of various departments helps to overcome major difficulties preventing loss
and less quality.
• The company’s role in reducing the costs in everyplace they could. For example, the
production firm is lighted naturally utilizing direct sunlight.
• Innovation in different concepts is seen where the company is up-to-date in every necessity
whether in the management or in the market.
CONCLUSION
The motive of this industrial immersion project is to study and understand the managerial
concepts implemented in the industry. Visit to this company gave great insights of their
production and management departments. This Industrial Immersion Project gave a live
experience of management Concepts throughout the process and also the company and its
performance in the global market.
It was a pleasure to experience the Industrial functioning of Roots for 5
days. Through this Immersion Project, I was able to gain new insights and more comprehensive
understanding about the real industry working condition and practice. As a result of the
program now we are more confident to enter the industrial world and build our future career.
