Communication Problems and Solutions 2

An organization may not fail due to poor communication but without effective communication

an organization will not succeed. Growth and success are often the ultimate measure of a strong

business. Those businesses that recognize that the amount of significance paid to proper and effective

communication find there is a directly proportional relationship to growth and success. Those

businesses that strive to understand how communication occurs in their organization will find a greater

return if they also strive to understand why communication may not be occurring.

Because communication can happen in a variety of ways an organization might achieve a greater

benefit if it could identify the most common communication problems. Once the most common

problems have been identified and solutions put into place then a business should look at ways in which

it might deal with specific issues and address those on a case by case basis. Conversely, some business

may decide to examine its processes and address any problems as process specific. Each approach has

pros and cons and it relies upon management and leadership to determine which method would be the

most appropriate.

For this exercise, we will examine communication problems as they are likely to exist in the most

common business environment. The problems discussed will not be listed in any particular order, only

addressed as a result of my research and that issue’s reoccurrence from source to source.

From my research, here are the most repeatedly discussed issues. Expectations are not be

clearly defined by management. In my organization, this happens on occasion and mostly with the

implementation of new initiatives. Communication is slow or non-existent between offices or locations

in separate geographical areas. Because of the lack of face to face interaction, communications

between geographically different locations can happen. The “out of sight, out of mind” thought process

only exacerbates this problem. Information is not disseminated to all employees. How often has the

phrase, “didn’t you hear about this?” been spoken in any organization? Within my company, this occurs

mostly because of pre-defined email groups. A manager decides which group captures the majority of

people that should know what is being written and doesn’t bother to take the time to consider others

that might benefit from that email
