Subject- Verb Agreement
A common cause of errors are the intervening
words. Intervening words are words found between
the subject and the verb. They don’t in any way
affect the agreement between the subject and the
verb. The most common of intervening words are
composed of prepositional phrases.
oOne of the athletes sprains his knee during
the scrimmage.
The word “athletes” could be mistaken for subject
of the sentence. It is an object of the preposition
“of” and can’t be used as a subject.
