Tutorial 3

This document contains 5 questions regarding hydrostatic forces on gates, cylinders, and tank walls submerged in fluids like water and oil. Question 1 asks about the horizontal and vertical forces on a 3m curved gate in a reservoir. Question 2 asks about the horizontal force needed to hold a quarter-circle 20ft gate in place. Question 3 asks about the horizontal force a floating 9m cylinder exerts on a wall. Question 4 asks about the magnitude and direction of force of water on the bottom of an open cylindrical tank. Question 5 asks about the resultant force of water on a 1m section of curved tank wall.

QUESTION 2
The 20-ft-long gate is a quarter circle and is hinged at H. Determine the horizontal force, P,
required to hold the gate in place. Neglect friction at hinge and the gate’s weight.
