DAVITS AND DAVIT SOCKETS
The work instruction covers the following equipment: • Cast in sockets • Surface mounted sockets •
Wall mounted sockets • Multi-purpose sockets • Single part davits • Multi-part davits
The following legislation applies to this equipment: The Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment
Regulations. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. For guidance, generally in
accordance with BS7333 classification A3
1. THOROUGH EXAMINATION
1.1. Sockets
1.1.1.Check the general condition of the socket fixings and surrounding concrete if cast in or
surface type. Be aware of later additions such as hand rails that may affect the integrity
of the concrete.
1.1.2.Check that where nuts and bolts are used there is a minimum of two threads showing
and locking washers are used
1.1.3.Check all welds
1.1.4.Check vertical alignment
1.1.5.Check for debris in the socket
1.1.6.The maximum clearance between mating parts should be no more than 2mm
1.1.7.Multi-purpose sockets should be 67mm diameter
1.1.8.Sockets should be marked with the following information • Safe Working Load •
Identity number and/asset number
1.1.9.CE marking • Maximum working radius
1.1.10. The recommended minimum edge distance is 100mm although this could be less
dependent upon the bolt size and type refer to design/manufacturers
recommendations
1.2. Davits
1.2.1.Check the general condition of the davit
1.2.2.Check that where nuts and bolts are used there is a minimum of two threads showing
and locking washers are used
1.2.3.Check all welds
1.2.4.The maximum clearance between mating parts should be no more than 2mm
1.2.5.Check vertical alignment
1.2.6.Check lubrication of moving parts
1.2.7.Examine all bearing points for excess wear
1.2.8.Davits should marked with the following information • Safe Working Load • Identity
number and/asset number • CE marking • Maximum working radius
1.2.9.Multi-part davits should have each individual part uniquely marked
1.2.10. Check Aluminium davits for indentations and distortion
1.2.11. Where the davit uses a webbing tie check carefully the condition of the webbing
1.2.12. Where the davit uses a wire rope tie check that the ferrule tail is correct
1.2.13. Where a winch is fitted to the davit inspect in accordance with work instruction L3-
34 Winches paying particular attention to the wire rope condition and lay.
