Hazardous Materials Awareness Course

The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management's 8-hour "Hazardous Materials Awareness" course provided instruction to first responders on avoidance, communication and identification of hazmat situations. Trainees discussed policies and used a Materials Identification Guidebook, then tested their knowledge through simulations. While only an introduction, the course helped the author network, learn the training process and inform their career considerations around hazmat response.

Experiential Reflection

Hazardous Materials Awareness

11/22/2017

The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management’s “Hazardous Materials

Awareness” course is designed to serve as a foundation for first responders and
emergency management officials who might encounter hazmat situations. The
course consists of 8 hours of instruction from a trained expert.
Topics covered include avoidance and communication policies, as well as
discussion on how to effectively use a standardized Materials Identification
Guidebook. During the training, we were given opportunities to discuss hazardous
materials awareness through the lens of current events and questions. Once we
were familiarized with the basics, we tested our knowledge with simulations.
While this course was only an introduction, it was my first professional training
outside of FEMA IS courses. It was an opportunity for me to meet others in my
field and become more familiar with the training process. I took this course at a
time where I was heavily considering hazmat response as a profession. This is not
where I anticipate ending up, but I still value what I learned while attending
ADEM’s Hazardous Materials Awareness course.
