Implicit learning and e(plicit learning.

0ou learned that you must learn English implicitly to speak English
English well.

In this lesson, well talk about one of the best methods for learning English implicitly…
listening.

Let&s Start With Some Ba News ,or Those Who

%ate Listening
:eres the bottom line' if you want to speak English well, you have to listen to English on a
regular basis.

Its impossible to become an advanced English speaker without a lot of listening.

 Why?

#o speak English well, you need to build implicit knowledge of English. #he greater your
implicit knowledge, the better. If you dont understand this, go back to thefirst
the first lesson./
lesson./
6nd guess what…listening is the easiest
easiest way to build your implicit knowledge
knowledge of English.

If we take two groups of English students, and we tell the first group to study grammar
everyday while telling the second group to listen to English everyday.
Aver the period of si( months, youll find that the second group can speak English much
better than the first group B #hey are better at finding appropriate words to use, their
sentence structure is much better, and so on and so forth.

 Why?

#he reason is that the second group has greater implicit knowledge of English than the first
group. 1reater implicit knowledge C better speaking.

:ave you ever tried to talk to yourself in English?

&ome English students do it.

#hey talk to themselves about random stuff, hoping that they will become more fluent.

8nfortunately, this is not a good way to improve your speaking.

#here are two problems with talking to yourself in English.

Problem 1 — Incorrect English

!any English students make lots of mistakes when speaking English. #hey use vocabulary
incorrectly. #heir speak with improper sentence structure and weird pronunciation.

Imagine what will happen if these people practice English by themselves?

:eres what will happen' their mistakes will get repeated over and over, making it more
likely for them to repeat those mistakes in the future.

6fter practicing this way for a few months, they might speak more fluently. "ut nobody will
understand them because they dont speak English like native speakers do. #heyve

Problem 2 — You’re not learning new vocabulary
!ost English students have a very small active vocabulary  English words that they can
use when speaking/, while their passive vocabulary English words that they know/ is
relatively large.
#his means they have no problem understanding other people, but they cant e(press
themselves clearly.

!ost students have very small active vocabulary.

When you start improving your speaking, your priority should be to e(pand your active
 vocabulary.

"ut how many words do you learn if you practice by talking to yourself?

"elow is the strategy for becoming fluent in English'

#he strategy has three essential steps'

%. 8se English speaking e(ercises to

*. 9ractice English using the Imitation techni$ue on a regular basis until youre
satisfied with your spoken English.

#hats all you need to do to speak fluent English.

Font underestimate this strategy because of its simplicity. !astering a language is not
supposed to be complicated. 0ou Gust have to find methods that work and use them over
and over until you get the results you want.
6an you trust my a(#i"e2

;hances are, you have spent lots of time looking for ways to
master English. 0ouve probably followed advice given by English teachers.

"ut my guess is, your speaking hasnt improved much.

:ow do I know this?

"ecause HH of English teachers actually have no idea how to master a second language.
#he only reason they can speak English better than you is because they grew up in an
Englishspeaking country

8nlike those teachers, I truly know how to master a foreign language without living abroad.
I became fluent in English on my own, without help from others. I can teach you to do the
same. In fact, to this day, Ive never set foot in any Englishspeaking country./

able to do that.

In order to form sentences $uickly and easily, you need a lot of practice. #hats when this

6fter that, I revised the techni$ue a few times to make it more effective. Eventually, I
named the techni$ue Imitation.- I chose that name because the key idea behind the
techni$ue is to imitate native speakers so that you speak English like them.

The Biggest Mistakes That + Ma(e

Now that Ive told you my story, I want to share with you the three biggest mistakes that I
made during my GourneyBmistakes I wish I hadnt made. If you want to improve fast, make
sure you dont make these same mistakes.

8istake 516 ,pen"ing too much time on easy English lessons

6s I alluded to earlier, I started improving my English by using English courses. #he creator
of those courses was probably the most famous English teacher on the Internet. :es still
very famous today./ :e told his students to use each lesson every day for at least seven
days. I followed his advice.

6t first, I found the lessons to be $uite challenging. #his kind of training was new to me.
:owever, since every lesson had the same difficult level, the training $uickly became easy,
and I stopped improving. In spite of that, I still practiced each lesson at least seven times
since I didnt know what else to do. 6t this point, I had not discovered Imitation yet./
Jooking back, its really obvious why that was a big mistake. If you keep using courses that
only have easy e(ercises, youll never become good enough at speaking English. Even if you
repeat those courses a thousand times, your English will still be at the same level since
youre not really challenging your current English level.

#hats the reason the Eng5luent course has both easy lessons !odule %/ andadvanced
lessons !odule )/. I want to keep challenging my students English level.
8istake 526 Trying to improve my speaking by talking about ran"om things !to
mysel#
6fter I stopped using those easy English courses, and before I came up with the Imitation
techni$ue, I tried to improve my speaking by talking to myself in English. I would talk
about what I did yesterday, whats my plan for the day, etc.

I didnt work at all. #he first problem is that I wasnt e(posing myself to correct English.
When I tried to e(press an idea, I had no idea if I was speaking English properly or not.
When I practiced this way, I had a feeling that if there were other people listening to me,
they probably wouldnt understand me since I wasnt speaking English like native speakers.
#he second problem is that you dont learn any new vocabulary if you practice this way.

#he bottom line is, talking to yourself about random stuff doesnt work very well. Font
 waste your time doing it.

8istake 5*6 Trying to improve my speaking using too many metho"s0

Even after I became $uite good at speaking English thanks to Imitation, I still hadnt
ditched the other methods that Id been using. I will not tell you what those methods were.
6ll you need to know is that they were difficult to use and not as effective as Imitation. "ut I
didnt know that at the time. It took me some time to realiDe that Imitation is really the best
way to improve my speaking. Ance I realiDed that, I stopped using the other methods
altogether, focusing solely on using Imitation to improve my speaking. "ecause of that
decision, I improved a lot faster.

6ll right. #hose are the three biggest mistakes I wish I hadnt made. #hey are the reasons it
look me % year and H months instead of H 2 %) months. If I had to start over, heres what Id
do instead'

%. 9ractice with one English course until Ive mastered every lesson. If a certain lesson
is too easy, if will not repeat that lesson. Instead, Ill move on to the ne(t one
immediately. #heres no need to spend my valuable time on easy lessons.
). Ance Ive mastered the basics, I will start using the Imitation techni$ue immediately.
I will not waste my time on any other learning activities that are less effective.

Why + Starte( Eng3luent

6fter I became really good at speaking English, I got really e(cited. 5inally, I had discovered
a techni$ue that would allow any English student to become truly fluent in English. 6nd I
wanted to share it with the world.

6t the time, I had always been upset with English teachers on the Internet. !ost of them
were not sharing anything worthwhile. #hey tended to give students mediocre advice'

 #heyd tell you, try to speak English as much as possible- or practice every day,-
but they didnt tell you what to do if you have on one to talk to. #hey actually didnt
know how./

 #heyd tell you, dont be afraid to make mistakes,- but they didnt tell you how to
practice in a way that you will make fewer and fewer mistakes over time. #hey didnt
know it./

 #heyd tell you, Gust be confident,- but they didnt give you any concrete plan for
improving your English so that you can speak confidently. #hey didnt have one./

#he problem with these pieces of advice is that they arent very actionable. #heres no step
bystep strategy, no framework, no plan. #he advice might seem- to be useful. "ut in
reality, its simply a total waste of time.

&o, out of frustration, I made one of the biggest decisions in my life. I $uit my Gob as a
software engineer and started Eng5luent to teach people how to become truly fluent in
English. I would do that by sharing proven methods and techni$ues that were based on
personal e(perience.

&taring Eng5luent was the best decision of my life. #oday, Im making an impact on
peoples lives through my 0ou#ube videos and my English 5luency #raining course, and Im
really proud of what Im doing.
What&s 'our Story2

Who are you, and what is your story?

6re you someone who, like me, isnt satisfied with Gust being able to speak basic- English?

6nybody can speak basic English nowadays. If you want to get ahead in todays world,
where competition is global, you need to be able to speak advanced English. Its the kind of
English that can be used in real life.

I shared my story with you to let you know that anyone, no matter who they are, can
accomplish great things if they take consistent action and never stop moving forward. If you
arent satisfied with your current English level, keep in mind that it doesnt have to be that
way. If you apply the strategy Ive taught you, si( months from now, you will find that your
spoken English has reached a whole new level.

I truly believe that my course can help take your English speaking skills to the ne(t level. If
you like my approach to learning English, click here to get your copy of English 5luency
#raining.
#his is why you must listen to English regularly. If youre not willing to do that, the best you
can accomplish is being able to speak basic or intermediate English but not advanced
English.
