Cable Specification

This document specifies the design requirements for a 230kV high voltage power cable. It describes the cable as having a single core copper conductor with XLPE insulation, copper wire screen, and copper laminated foil sheath. The outer jacket is made of halogen free fire retardant HDPE. Key ratings include a service voltage of 230kV, highest system voltage of 245kV, and basic insulation level of 1050kV. The document also lists relevant reference standards for cable design and testing and provides details on the construction of the conductor, insulation, screens, and outer jacket.

Scope
This specification covers the design, manufacturing, supplying erection, testing and commissioning of a single‐
core copper conductor, XLPE insulated, copper wire screened, copper laminated foil sheathed,
HDPE(characterizing halogen free fire retardant(HFPO)) sheathed cable with the following ratings.
‐. Service voltage: 230kV
‐. Highest system voltage: 245kV
‐. Power frequency: 60Hz
‐. Short‐time current level: 63kArms/1sec
‐. Basic insulation level: 1050kV
‐. Power frequency short duration withstand voltage: 460kV

2. Reference Standard
IEC 60071: Insulation co‐ordination
IEC 60228: Conductors of insulated cables
IEC 60229: Test on cable oversheaths which have a special protective function and are applied by extrusion
IEC 60287: Calculation of the continuous current rating of cables
IEC 60811: Common test methods for insulating sheathing materials of electric cables
IEC 62067: Power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltages above 150kV
(Um=170kV)
up to 500kV (Um=550kV)
IEC 60949: Calculation of thermally permissible short‐circuit current, taking into account non‐adiabatic heating
effects
IEC 61443: Short‐circuit temperature limits of electric cables with rated voltages above 30kV (Um=36kV)
3. Cable design
3.1 Conductor
The conductor shall consist of compact, round stranded, soft annealed copper wire according to IEC 60228.
The
conductor will be water‐blocked to meet the requirements of IEC 62067, using water‐blocking tapes and
powder.
The size of the conductor shall be nominally 800sqmm. The DC resistance at 20oC of each conductor shall not
exceed 0.0221 ohm/km.
3.2 Conductor screen
The conductor screen shall comprise an extruded layer of semi‐conducting thermosetting compound,
compatible
with the conductor. The screen shall be applied over the conductor, as part of the simultaneous extrusion of
the
conductor screen, insulation and insulation screen. The screen shall be uniformly and firmly bonded to the
conductor.

3.3 Insulation
The insulation shall be of a compound of super‐clean cross‐linked polyethylene (XLPE). The insulation shall be
applied by extrusion in a triple layer extrusion head. It shall be free from harmful protrusions, contaminants
and voids under service conditions. The minimum average thickness shall be 24.0mm.
3.4 Insulation screen
The insulation screen shall consist of an extruded layer of semi‐conducting thermosetting compound. The
screen shall be applied over the insulation, as part of the simultaneous extrusion of the conductor screen,
insulation and insulation screen. The screen shall be uniformly and firmly bonded to the insulation. A semi‐
conducting tape shall be applied as a bedding tape over the insulation screen.
3.5 Metallic screen
The copper wire screen shall be provided to ensure the maximum fault current rating. A copper tape shall be
lapped over the copper wires, and a semi‐conductive swellable tape shall be applied as a bedding tape under
the foil sheath
3.6 Foil Sheath
The foil sheath shall consist of copper laminated tape. The foil sheath shall be applied over metallic screen to
prevent radial water penetration.
3.7 Outer Jacket
The outer jacket shall consist of extruded and black‐colored Medium density Polyethylene, (MDPE),
with graphite coating as conductive layer. The minimum average thickness shall be 3.95mm.
4. Marking and Identification
The marking and identification shall be provided according to Manufacturer Standard.
5. Sealing and Drumming
The sealing and drumming shall be provided according to Manufacturer Standard.
