Trump's TikTok Safety Plan

President Trump aims to ban TikTok in the US over national security concerns about China spying on American users and stealing their personal data. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says access to the app could be allowed if proper safeguards are put in place. Trump has proposed that the US purchase TikTok as an alternative to an outright ban, which would allow the app's over 100 million American users to continue using it safely while addressing security issues and generating profits for the US.

President Donald trump develops master plan to make TikTok safe again.
By Deamanthe Kassapis, September 21st, 2020.

US President
Donald trump aims to ban downloads of the Chinese- owned video sharing app TikTok, to “safeguard
the national security of the United States”. The government is planning to use their power to ensure
the popular app is safe again. President Trump has previously threatened to ban the application in the
US, after concerns about children’s safety.

Commerce secretary Wilbur Ross said early that access to that app may be possible if certain
safeguards are put in place.
“At the president’s direction, we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection
of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based
norms, and aggressive enforcement of US laws and regulations,” Ross said in a prepared statement on
fox business news.

TikTok is one of the highest downloaded apps in the US, with over 100 million users. President
Trump has identified that the Chinese are using the app to spy on US citizens and steal their personal
data. The order labelled TikTok a “national emergency” and said the Chinese government may use it
for disinformation campaigns. TikTok has repeatedly denied collecting users’ personal data and have
said that the US had ‘paid no attention to the facts.’

The US government has identified that the Chinese are a threat to the users of the app, and a smart
solution needs to be created to protect the US citizens. Banning the app was the initial plans of the
government and remains a possible option if the two governments cannot agree to an alternative.

The proposal of the banning the app caused disagreements and arguments between the users and the
US government. Trump received large amounts of hate from uneducated users who do not understand
the threat that china faces to their identity and safety. Following this, an alternative idea to protect the
US was created. Trump and the US government proposed that the US purchase TikTok. This would
allow for the users to become safe again, and the protective government to have ownership of the
successful app. Through this, the US would receive the profits made through TikTok, and use them
responsibly, as they do with profits from other successful businesses.
