LAB ACTIVITY No. 3-- DECIPHERMENT OF SECRECT WRITING
Introduction
Have you ever wondered how spies and secret agents could leave secret messages? Invisible ink might
sound high tech, but you can create—and read!—a top secret message with one simple kitchen ingredient:
lemons. George Washington's army used this same concept to send secret messages during the American
Revolutionary War. What message will you write?
Background
Lemon juice—and the juice of most fruits, for that matter—contain carbon compounds. These compounds
are pretty much colorless at room temperature. But heat can break down these compounds, releasing the
carbon. If the carbon comes in contact with the air, a process called oxidation occurs, and the substance
turns light or dark brown.
Materials
One half of a lemon (use caution when cutting)
One half teaspoon of water
Small bowl
Spoon
White paper
Writing apparatus. (cotton buds write a decoy message on your paper) )
A source of heat. A hairdryer, iron, lamp or candle
Preparation
• Squeeze the juice of your lemon half into the bowl.
• Add the water and mix with a spoon.
• Think of a secret message you would like to write—and to whom you're going to deliver it!
• Extra: If you want to be super secret, you can write a boring old message or draw a picture on the paper
with a pencil before you write your secret message to disguise it even further.
Procedure
• Soak the Q-tip in the lemon juice-and-water solution.
• Use the damp Q-tip to write your top-secret message on the piece of paper.
• Wait a few minutes for the paper to dry. While you're waiting, you can switch on your lamp to give the
lightbulb time to heat up (being careful not to touch the hot bulb itself).
• When the paper is dry, hold it up to the hot lamp for a few minutes (but don't let the paper get so hot that
it burns).
INSTRUCTION: Write a message using a secret ink in the box provided and perform how the
secret writings can be deciphered.
Outcome: Gain experience in the preparation of the basic components of secret inks and to
demonstrate secret writings can be deciphered.

LAB ACTIVITY No. 4- CHARACTERISTICS OF HANDWRITING
Objective
To analyze your own handwriting using the Characteristics Table, similar to what examiners use in
the field.
Materials
Blue or Black Pen
The 12 characteristics from your Questioned Documents Notes
A sheet of lined notebook paper
Magnifying glass
Measuring Tools
Characteristics Table
Procedure
1. Write the following paragraph in cursive on your sheet of lined notebook paper. Do not try to
disguise your writing. Write like you normally would in cursive.
At 3:57 p.m. detectives responded to an attempted murder at 1234 Elm Street. Upon entering the
residence, they noticed a broken glass sliding door. In the residence, they noticed blood spatter.
Eventually, they find out that the blood samples came from two different individuals. Eyewitnesses describe
a tall, Caucasian man fleeing the scene in a white unmarked van. He was seen wearing blue coveralls and
white sneakers. The detectives continued to process the scene and analyze all of the important evidence to
help make their case.
2. Using the magnifying glass examine the paragraph that you just wrote.
3. Using your notes about the 12 characteristics, analyze your own handwriting. Fill out the
Characteristics Table handout.
4. After you complete the Characteristics Table handout, compare your handwriting with another
student’s sample. With your partner, discuss how each of your handwritings is unique to you.
5. Write a conclusion describing what you have learned in this lab about handwriting and the 12
characteristics. It must be at least 6 sentences.
