Project Management
Problem of CPM
1. Schedules and activities of a project are shown below. Answer the questions.
Activity Predecessor(s) Duration (week) Activity Predecessor(s) Duration (week)
A 3 G B 7
B A 6 H G 2
C A 2 I H 2
D B 2 J C 3
E D 3 K B, J 1
F E, G 3 L K 3
Questions:
i) Draw a network diagram using AON and find the critical path and project completion time.
ii) Calculate float/Slack of the noncritical activities.
iii) Activity C needs a delayed time of two weeks and an extra time of one week. Is it possible by keeping the
project completion time unchanged? Explain.
iv) If the project manager wants to delay the activity B by 5 weeks (From 6 weeks to 11 weeks), what will be
the impact on project completion time?
v) Can activity K be delayed without delaying the project completion time? If so, how many weeks? How
much dollar can be saved by keeping the project completion time unchanged, if $2500 can be saved for
each delayed week of activity K?
i) Network Diagram using AON (CPM chart)
Follow the diagram shown in the class.
Where t is duration of the activity, ES = Earliest Start, EC = Earliest Completion, LS = Latest Start,
LC = Latest Completion
Critical Path = A, B, G, H & I
Project Completion Time = 20 weeks
ii) Non-critical activities are C, D, E, F, J, K, & L
Float/Slack (LS – ES or LC – EC) time of the non critical activities are as follows:
Activity C D E F J K L
Float Time 8 3 3 1 8 7 7
iii) Float time of the activity C is 8 weeks. So it is possible to delay the activity or/and extend the activity by 8 weeks. In
the question more time required by the activity C is 2 + 1 = 3 weeks, which is less than 8 weeks. Therefore it is
possible to delay the start of C by 2 weeks and to extend it time by 1 week.
iv) As B is critical activity, it has impact on project completion time. The project completion time will also be delayed by
5 weeks. New completion time will be 20+5= 25 weeks.
v) Yes, by 7 weeks as K is a non-critical activity with slack 7.
Total 2500*7= $17500 can be saved.
