A Lesson on Taglocks
What is a taglock?
“Taglock” is a term that refers to any object that literally or symbolically
reflects a subject. People use them in spells to create a link between the spell
and the target. Taglocks can be both representative of you or another target.
Taglocks are not necessary in spells, but can help make sure the spell is
affecting only the intended target. It’s especially important to use them for
spells that you do not want to affect other people, i.e. baneful workings.
What are examples of taglocks?
Biological Taglocks
The taglock that even beginner witches are usually familiar with is
blood. However, that’s definitely not the only taglock! As for items that
literally come from you, one might use blood, urine, hair, nails, bodily
fluids, et cetera.
Symbolic Taglocks
However, worry not if biological taglocks make you squeamish! There
are other taglocks that you can use. You can use a picture of your
target, their true name written down, or an item that has significance
to them or something they made by hand. You can get more creative
with symbolic taglocks- you may sew a doll that looks like them, use
fabric from their clothes, etc.
How can taglocks be used?
If you’re doing, for example, a protection jar spell, you might write your name
down on a piece of paper and put it in the jar spell. If you’re doing a candle
spell to help a friend get better after they’re sick, you could tape a picture of
them to the candle. If you’re making a spell to make someone come to justice
for past actions, you could put a strand of their hair into the spell. If you have
someone in your life that you wish would leave and not return, you might
incorporate a piece of art they made or their favorite item into the spell.
Precautions with Taglocks
In the media, you often see “dark witches” (I hate the term) putting their own
blood into baneful spells. Do. Not. Do. This. You’re taglocking the spell to
yourself and making it super easy for the effects of the spell to affect YOU
rather than the intended target.
A Lesson on Taglocks
Another precaution with blood magic- be safe and sanitary. The best method
to collect blood is with a diabetic lancet. Make sure you clean the area with an
alcohol wipe before pricking yourself. Additionally, please don’t do something
dumb like try to get blood by cutting yourself with a knife. You risk being
seriously hurt and getting a bad infection. If you want to do blood magic,
invest in safe and sanitary methods. If you have periods, it’s also possible to
use menstruation blood in spells.
Please do not keep any bodily fluids (blood, urine, et cetera) for any period of
time unless you have a stabilizer and/or correct conditions to store it in.
An obvious note that still needs to be said- do not consume any taglocks that
are not intended to be edible. Do not put blood into tea or, god forbid, drink
your own urine. Please. Use common sense and safety.
