• 1D Heat equation
• 2D Equilibrium equation

3. Name few techniques used to obtain the approximate solution to partial differential equa-
tions. Explain the finite difference method procedure in detail.

4. Explain the difference between the boundary value problem and initial value problem
using an example.

5. Explain the following briefly

• Principle of virtual displacments

• Principle of virtual forces
• Principle of virtual work
• How finite element method is different from finite difference method

6. Using finite difference method, write the algebraic equation at a nodal point i for a beam
bending problem given by the following differential equation

7. The bar has a variable area of cross-section which is denoted by the function A(x) as
shown in Figure 1. The length of the bar is L. The Young’s modules of the bar material
is E . The bar is fixed at the end x = 0. The forces acting on the bar are (i) a distributed
force q(x), which varies with x and (ii) a point force F at the end x = L . Establish

• Differential equation of equilibrium of the problem

• Boundary conditions

8. Write the governing differential equation, essential and natural bc’s for the problem of
beam on elastic foundation as shown in the Figure 3
Kf = Subgrade reaction (spring constant/unit length) and Ks = Flexibe end support.
