For and against essay about Wikipedia
Wikipedia is a project on January 15, 2001 to create a free website in several languages using the so-
called Wiki principle.
Wikipedia offers free, that is, free and intended for further distribution, from rare entries to
frequently asked articles. According to co-founder Jimmy Wales, the goal is "to create a freely
licensed and high-quality encyclopedia and thus to disseminate lexical knowledge"
In January 2021, Wikipedia was the 13th most visited website in the world. It was in seventh place in
Germany, sixth in Austria, fourth in Switzerland and eighth in the USA. The website is worldwide, the
only non-commercial website in the top 50. It is funded by donations. As of December 31, 2020,
there were over 55.6 million articles written in 300 languages.
Against Wikipedia
There have been documented problems caused by open, anonymous gatherings of people in
Wikipedia, such as the writing of vitriol. Another problem is that anyone can edit articles at any time,
so people can vandalize articles, if they have an account.
Wikipedia provides Internet users with millions of articles on a broad range of topics, and commonly
ranks first in search engines. But its reliability and credibility fall well short of the standards for a
school paper. According to Wikipedia itself, “while some articles are of the highest quality of
scholarship, others are admittedly complete rubbish.”
For Wikipedia
Effectively navigating a Wikipedia article can provide students with an opportunity to learn about
peer review, sourcing, footnotes, and internet research. It also teaches critical-thinking skills.
Wikipedia is by far the world's largest encyclopedia, it is the largest, most comprehensive, and most
accessible compilation of knowledge to exist in the history of the humans. Wikipedia is not paper,
and that is a good thing because articles are not strictly limited in size as they are with paper
encyclopedias.
