Article 1: “What is journalism for? The short answer: truth” by Clive Myrie
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/mar/11/journalism-truth-strong-regulation-us-
media-uk
Summary:
Having read the article, it is obvious that journalism plays an important role in today’s society.
The world is developing all the time, people need information and news to be aware of things
around them. Journalism underpins everything they do and provides us with information.
Undoubtedly journalists need to ask lots of questions to themselves in order to gather right
information in the right time. As I realize the power of journalism is immense. There are cases
how journalism had an impact on societal changes, how it enforced politicians or government to
change the law or to change their manner in a good way.
Although many of us think that journalism does not require regulations under democracy, there
are some countries where people and government believe that regulations are important because
they make newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and etc fair and nondiscriminatory. However in
the US the situation is different. As it is is a country of democracy, there is more freedom in
journalism, no strict regulations which means any kind of opinion is acceptable and is protected
within the law. Such freedom is not so good. That is why there are cases of toxic media
environment. Undoubtedly clear and transparent rules and guides in journalism is better
because they can provide society with adequate information which would be fair.
To sum up, too much freedom is not the way. In my opinion, journalism is not only to show
everything to society. People need right and adequate information. Broadcasters should provide
adequate coverage of public issues. There should be a line which journalists should not cross
because sometimes they forget about their limits, violate people’s rights in order to get
popularity and roughly touch others reputations. For me the main thing in journalism is to be
fair and to show the truth to society.

Article 2: “Why are adoption numbers falling, when there are so many children in need?” by
Margaret Reynolds
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/mar/10/adoption-numbers-falling-children-need-
care-system
Summary:
Family values are very important. We learn a lot from our parents, we try to copy good things
from our family members and use them on the path of our lives. However while for most
children the best place to grow up is with their family members, others are unable to do so.
Adoption is a good way to provide children who do not have parents with permanent
alternative homes. Many families who have problems of not having their own children because
of their health problems, try to adopt children. However according to the article, surprisingly,
adoption numbers are falling nowadays. The reasons are several for this issue. Firstly, new laws
and regulations played an important role. From 2013 judges declared the law under which
adoption was only appropriate when there was no any other case or a way. Another change in
regulations had an impact on a decrease in adoption- this was the law of SGOS which helped
children with the share of parental responsibilities, however it was not the complete transfer as
it could be with adoption. Another reason as I have seen from the article is the development of
health system. Nowadays parents who have problems of fertilization have possibilities of using
some other methods to have their own children, therefore they try to use these methods and if
they still do not work, then they start thinking of adopting a new child. So adoption has become
a last resort for parents.
To sum up, we, society should pay more attention to this issue. We should realize this fact more.
We should realize that there are children who need our care. As a society we owe some
responsibilities to orphan children.
