The Trinity
In today's day and age, we are distracted at every turn. The
veil of information fog is littered with social media posts,
clickbait videos, shows on-demand and algorithmic advertising
customized just for you. So how can you pierce through the noise
and defend your precious attention?
Here’s the secret formula: (Hint: it’s not electric Kool-Aid)
Purposeful Work + Supportive Environment + Mastered Mindset =
Inevitable Success
Firstly, you must define the underlying purpose and the desired
results behind what you’re doing. A vision will help you stay
focused, motivated, and create meaning behind your tasks. This
will also grant you the ability to always know your highest
priority and keep you inspired with your big-picture vision in
mind.
Next is the environment that surrounds you. We are in-part,
products of our environment. You’ll have to create an
environment that inspires you, is distraction-free and most
importantly, supports laser-ninja focus
Beyond your environment is the space in your head. The most
crucial component for success is the belief you have in your own
abilities. A positive attitude and self-confidence in your
capabilities are the foundation for all your future endeavours.

The greatest obstacle you can ever overcome is yourself.
If you’re having trouble identifying what’s most important in
reaching your goals, this map will guide you through:
- Discovering purpose in your work
- Creating a supportive environment
- Mastering a successful mindset

1) Your Purpose
The first step on this Mindset Map is to reflect on your WHY.
To map out the future of your journey you need to clarify why
you’ve chosen this life-path, what you hope to achieve upon
arrival, and where you would like to end up.
Below are a few questions to ask yourself to better define your
map. WHY do you want to travel this path in life and WHAT do you
want to gain from it? Grab your planner or your sacred journal
and write down your answers.
PRO TIP: Don’t focus on HOW you’re going to get there yet. Focus
on what you want from the journey and why it matters to you.
What’s your intention?
#1 If you woke up tomorrow and had the life
you always wanted, what would it look like? Be
specific - Where are you living? How are you
spending your time? What are you doing to earn
money? Who is sharing this moment with you?
#2 As self-serving as we can be, we all desire
to connect with others and contribute to a
higher purpose beyond our own happiness. How
do you want to impact other people's lives?
What do you want to say? Who do you want to
help and inspire? What beliefs and values do
you want to promote?
#3 Unify your goals, beliefs, and desires to
express them in a single statement that
encompasses your ultimate intention to move
forward in life. This is a manifesto of your
WHY. Your mission statement. A life purpose.

2) Your Environment
As much as we are propelled forward by a purpose and shaped by
our thoughts, our behaviour is also a reflection of our
environment.
Your work environment should take the form of a “sacred space”.
A temple, a lab, a dojo, a study, whatever it takes. Create a
space that sparks passion and focus. Hang up pictures of your
heroes, make a vision board of your goals and surround yourself
with inspiring materials.
Treat it with care. If you keep it clean and organized, your
mind will reflect the same.
Choose a unique space to work and “get in the zone”. Research
has shown that our brains attribute specific locations with
certain tasks. A kitchen for eating, a library for reading, a
bedroom for sleeping, etc. Make sure to separate your
recreational “relaxing area” from your “sacred work” area.
Prepare your drink of choice and make sure to have some H2O
handy.
Last but not least, clear your space of ALL distractions. Remove
any clutter or any potentially distracting objects (guitars in
my case). If you work on a computer, eliminate or limit your
internet usage. Finally, get rid of your phone. Throw it into a
neighbouring solar system for a while, it will only harm your
work ethic.

3) Your Mindset
Your mindset is your most powerful asset, but consequently, it
can also be your biggest problem.
The first step to developing a successful mindset is
to cultivate self-awareness. This means embracing
the role of the observer to become mindful of the
thoughts you entertain and how they affect you. Most
of us regularly engage with negative thoughts
whether it’s self-doubt, anxiety or fear of the
unknown.
“Awareness is the first step” as they say.
As you start observing your thoughts over time,
you’ll realize that they often re-trigger
automatically in reaction to certain things. The
more you develop your abilities to see these
patterns, the less they will influence you. Mindful
practices such as meditation, breath-work, and yoga
can accelerate the process.
You’ll come to realize that you are not your thoughts, you are
the one who experiences them.
Thankfully we can reprogram our thinking. This is where the
magic happens! You wizard you.
Once you’ve become aware of the problematic thought patterns
your mind creates, it’s time to detach from the negative and
embrace positivity. You’ll want to identify the common triggers
that send your mind racing down the rabbit hole of negativity.
Next time you confront that trigger it’s up to you to choose to
react differently.

A classic example of this is when you face some sort of
obstacle. Or make a mistake. (Which will ALWAYS continue to
happen by the way). Do you see this as a failure? Then proceed
to become frustrated and doubt yourself because of a “mistake”?
Or do you see it as an opportunity? A challenge to
learn something new and to do something better?
Both these reactions stem from the same circumstance
but yield vastly different perceptions. Think about
how this principle can apply to absolutely any
situation in life.
Now you see the true power of your mindset.
A great technique to help spark some positivity is
to “prime your thinking”. Before you start your day
try to direct the focus of your mind in a positive
direction. This can be done with a good book, a
peaceful walk in nature, or the best thing of all:
music.
A part of maintaining a successful mindset is to always have a
plan of action behind your work efforts. You don’t want to be
working by default: where a lack of clarity leads to
uncertainty, which then invites distraction and a poor work
ethic. Ultimately if you don’t set your priorities something
else will.
There’s a certain peace of mind that’s achieved by knowing what
you’re doing in advance. This is achieved by planning your
schedule.
When you finish your workday, perform an end of day “ritual”.
This is an important mental cue to look ahead to the next day
and tell your brain the workday is done. Otherwise, you’ll never
strike a work-life balance.

Checklist
Your Purpose: This should be the first thing that you see every
day. Why are you on this journey? Maintaining clarity on your
purpose will give meaning to your actions. It will also help you
define your priorities and allow you to remove tasks on your
list that don’t serve you or your goals.
Your Environment: Before you begin work, make sure your
workspace is clear of clutter and distractions. Make sure you
have ample lighting, your favourite drink and a vibe that’s
energizing and inspiring (photos, art, signs).
Your Mindset: As important as your workspace is, don’t neglect
your internal environment. Whether it's meditation, deep breaths
or some stretching, do something that will ground your mind from
wandering thoughts. The best work ethic is a holistic one. A
healthy diet, regular exercise, and regular hydration will do
wonders for your state of mind.
Your Tasks/Deadlines: If you haven’t already, you should start
making To-Do lists. A list will help you clear your mind and
keep you focused by enumerating the tasks you have to
accomplish. Once you’ve written a list, highlight everything
that’s time-sensitive.
Your Top 3: Now that you’ve identified what tasks are most time-
sensitive, or that need to be done before others, you can start
to prioritize. Choose the top 3 that deserve your complete
attention during the day. Then choose ONE to start with.
Your Attention: Silence your phone and put it in another room.
Make a promise to yourself to steer clear of distracting and
addictive time-wasters such as email and social media. If you
can’t trust yourself, turn off your internet connection or find
an app to help you.

I’m serious… once you harness the power to focus without
distraction your productivity will increase 10X.
Your Intention: As you continue working through the day, take
periodic breaks to re-calibrate your intention towards your
vision, your “why?. This will help keep you motivated and
encourage you to keep doing the work of the best quality.
Your Action: With a still mind, distraction-free environment and
inspired energy you’re ready for ACTION. In this flow state,
you’ll be able to complete tasks with more focus and detail. The
more you take action the clearer your vision will become, until
one day, it’s your new reality.
GOOD JOB! I want to congratulate you for putting in the work to
clarify and enhance your efforts to reach your goals.
I hope you’ve gained some insight as to the importance of having
the right mindset in order to take the right actions and stay
motivated.
Going forward I suggest you keep this checklist close by for
reference as needed until these steps become your habitual
routine.
