Look at the place where you live. Do you see land all around? The land
you see is part of the earth’s surface. There are different landforms. These
landforms make the earth’s surface uneven.
What are these landforms?
In this lesson, you will find out the different landforms and how they are
useful to us.

Landforms make up one-fourth of Earth’s surface. These are scattered all


over earth. This land part of Earth’s surface is called lithosphere.

Each landforms have different kinds of plants and animals. People also
live in different landforms. But the low landforms nearby bodies of water are
the places where many people would like to live.

A plain is a large area of a low flatland. Most


people build their homes here. Schools, factories
and other big buildings are also found on a plain.

A plain is good for farming. Farmers grow


different crops on a plain.

The wide plain in the Philippines are found


in Central Luzon, Bicol, Iloilo and Cotabato. The
widest plain is Central Luzon.

A mountain is a high landform with a slope. Most


mountains are covered with forests. It serves as a home
for many plants and animals. plants and animals live on
mountains. Gold. Copper and iron mines are also found
in the mountains. Some famous mountains in our
country are Mount Apo in Davao, the highest mountain
in our country, Mount Makiling in Laguna, Mount

A chain of mountain is called a


mountain range. Examples of this are
the Sierra madre, the Cordillera and the
Caraballo mountain ranges.

A volcano is a mountain that has opening or crater.


When a volcano erupts, hot materials inside the earth
come out. These materials can harm people, plants and
animals but volcanic materials form some of the most
fertile soils on earth. Some of our volcanoes are Mount
Mayon which is known for its perfect cone and one of
the most active volcanoes found in Bicol, Albay, Mount
Pinatubo in Zambales, Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon and
the most active volcano which erupted last February
2020 located in Batangas is Mount Taal.

A hill is a high landform that is lower than a


mountain. It can be a grazing place for
cattle. The most famous hill in our country
are the choloclate hills which are green
during rainy days and color chocolate
during sunny days or summer time.

A plateau is a flatland on a high place. An example of


a plateau is Baguio City. Tagaytay City is also a
plateau. It is cool in these places that’s why many
people spend their summer vacation there. There are
also plateaus in Bukidnon and Lanao

A valley is a low land bordered by


mountains. Cagayan Valley is the largest
valley in the Philippines. Other valleys are
Trinidad Valley in Benguet and South
Cotabato in Mindanao.

A peninsula is a part of the land that
extends out to the sea. It is almost
surrounded by water. Bataan, Bicol and
Zamboanga are peninsulas.

An island is a body of land completely surrounded


by water. Philippines has three main islands, Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao. The largest Island is Luzon.
It is composed of more than 7,000 islands. The
famous island is the hundred Islands in Pangasinan.
